In the Carousel on the far left there is a slot marked single. Place your favourite CD in that slot and when it's bed time press the single button to the left of the Direct & Program buttons on the front of the unit. Then press play, only the CD in the single slot will be played.
Enjoy.

The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, over time it becomes weak until it can no longer play. Buy a CD cleaning kit and follow instructions, this may add more life to the unit, if not! cheaper to replace the stereo than replace the assembly.
Your cd player is fubar and in definite need of replacement.
Tape unit seems to have a mind of its won. Try to reset the electronics to factory defaults. If that has no remedy, since it is a sony< best advise is to trash it. Repair cost is prohibitively expensive.
Something is out of timing. When powered up, the unit trys to get to a known state and will continue until it reaches that state. If the timing of the gears has been changed, this may not occur.
I'll try to see if I can create a set of instructions to re-time this.
Try this: 1. While holding "Title", Press Stop to enter what Denon calls "presetting" mode. 2. Press Track Search Reverse or Track Search Forward until you get to 20, which is the presetting mode for Single/Continuous Play. 3. Press Play to toggle between Continuous and Single Play. 4. Press Stop to exit Presetting Mode. Hope this works! I just finished a belabored job without Single Play on this unit. I have been searching for the answer too. I don't have access to the deck to try it, but I think this will do the job.
This is an excellent system for a bedroom or small
office area. The random color changing light feature is very soothing
to fall asleep to as well as the random/all disc playback so you don't
fall asleep to the same thing every night! The 90 minute max sleep
timer is just perfect to give me time to read a little and still be
able to fall asleep to music. I also use the random playback feature
during the day to play my parrot's training CDs so he doesn't get bored
either! This is a great system and I highly recommend it.
I had the same problem last night, I tried everything like you did, maybe I just got lucky. I was about to open the case of the unit, the system boot stopped and it went to sleep mode, then I turned it on and luckily the CD can be ejected. Just try playing around with it, you might get lucky. Good Luck......
NOTE: Never play that CD again in your SongCube
