The TV turns on fine but turns off by itself after a few seconds....if one uses the remote or the on/off swithc it'll turn on agin right away but turns itself off again

Fixed it !!! Used the approach by Guest; replaced both of the capacitors with 0.1 microfared caps from Ratshack. It's been working for two days. Thanks Guest.

Guest, Your the bomb. I went straight to radioshack and bought two of the capacitors you recommended. Replaced them and now my tv works again. Thanks again

Could someone please show the location of these caps on the board. I have the same model TV doing the same exact thing. Also the part number for the caps you bought at Rat Shack.....
Thanks a Million !

The transformers for the illumination are not bad, that is an excuse to charge a high repair price. The solution is : there are two capacitors across the transformers, there value is 124 nanofarad aprox. .12uf/250V.Check them for an open state.if you can get a higher temperature rating it will last longer.

Just a note from one who didn't read "Guest"'s statement carefully enough. I tried the cap fix but used a soldering gun versus and iron. The gun would not melt the factory solder and I wound up damaging the printed circuit board. TV now scrap.
Use an iron not a gun and be very steady.

Television shuts off

The capacitors I used were Rat Shack:
0.1 uF Metallized Polyester Film Capacitor
Model: 272-1053
Catalog #: 272-1053
They were located adjacent to the two flat transformers, are light brown in color, and are marked "WES 124J 250V" plus some other markings. Remove the screws holding on the main board and daughter board. Remove all the connectors except the flat cable connecting the daughter board to the screen. Fold the board over to expose the solder side, then use solder wick to desolder the capacitor leads. Bend the leads on the new caps to fit, solder in, you're done.

I, too, had the same issue with the TV shutting off... after following the capacitor replacement method that "Guest" suggested, the TV works perfect once again. After getting the unit apart, replacing the capacitors took less than 10 minutes. I now have a great-working LCD TV ...and the best part is.... it was given to me! I also replaced a burnt switching diode. Total investment into the repair project was less than $6.
Opened the tv (sylvania LD320SS8a) I found 2 light brown capacitors but each was different, one was labeled FNR G31D R2.5-4 M AC125V, the other: PVR 10D471K. These were located maybe 2 inches away from each other, but both adjacent to the flat transformers.

Did you ever find the solution to this problem? Wifes tv just started doing the same thing about 20 minutes ago, tried unplugging the device, resetting the sleep timer etc. If you got a remedy I'm all ears! Jeff D

you'll need to do a master reset of the device

Usually answered in minutes!
I took the tv to three different shops and here is the result....the transformer for the screen illumination is bad...this requires replacing the whole board since components are not available separately...I was looking at over 200 dollars to fix the problem..so I went out and bought another tv (not a Sylvania) for just a little more money. I will never again buy one of their pieces of c**p! Good luck.
Same problem, tv turned off automatically. It was in parts warranty but labor to replace board or whatever was $79 in addition the the $39 diagnostic. Have that piece of c**p gathering dust in the basement; bought a Sharp replacement. If there's an inexpensive solution I'd still like to get it fixed.
I had the same problem and followed the fix from "guest" used 2 new capacitors from radio shack and for $3.00 the tv is FIXED!!!! Thank you Guest!!
Your the best...now my husband thinks I can fix anything!
what watt iron do i use? 15 seemed to not melt the solder...
The fix proposed by “Guest” worked perfectly!
I followed the instructions in March of 2009 and my set has been running every since.
I must admit, I was skeptical that it could be that easy, but it was…
Thanks to “Guest” for the info!!!
Thanks to “3dmama” for the motivation!
