Samsung microwave door won't latch

My samsung over the range microwave door will not latch.

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2012

My microwave wasn't latching totally and would turn on and off. I found that the plastic latch that hold the lower part of the sping in place broke off. I glued the lower latch back on and that fixed the problem.

You will need a Samsung dealer repairman, the inner mechanism will need to be serviced because for some reason it is jammed or there are broken parts.

Wow I took this door apart and was disappointed to see how the door latch spring bracket was so thin and poorly designed that it was doomed to fail. Shame on you Samsung for engineering so poorly just to guarantee the need for service calls. I simply drilled another hole in the door latch bracket at a thicker part of the plastic and attached the spring to that. Finished the repair in 5 minutes without ordering any parts.

SOURCE: Sharp Carousel Microwave door latch stopped working door won't stay closed

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

We have *critical* safety & disassembly info at our site, linked here: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

We also have this full service manual at our site: http://www.microwavedisplay.com/R1480_R1481_R1482_sm.pdf

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: Door won't latch/microwave won't turn on

The door does come apart. Open the door and where the hinges are, there are openings where the hinges enter the door, this plastic piece (goes all the way around the door) With a small flat blade screws driver VERY carefully pry it (plastic) off, once off, check the latch end for the spring, typical failure for a Sharp is the little tab that the spring hooks to on the door, the only way to repair this so it will last is to replace the door frame. they are not too expensive, about $50 or so Part# FCOVB166KIT
is the door frame assy

Frigidaire microwave won't start when door is closed. It looks like the door does not latch properly. It worked 20 minutes ago and last night. How do you troubleshoot and/or fix the switches.

Hello Scott Noble - If I was in your position, I personally will recommend consulting a certified technician first for an accurate diagnosis. Depending on what part(s) is damaged from the door, the microwave could possibly have faulty switches, door switches, or latch which only a professional can repair.

Microwave won't start

I have the same problem. Is the light still on inside the microwave? Mine is on and the microwave thinks the door is not shut. I took the top off of the microwave and the latch needs to push down on a switch once shut. The latch was reaching the switch, but I think some spring in the door, pushing the latches down, has broken since it reaches the switch when closed but there isn't any downward force to flip the switch.
I am trying to figure out how to repair the latch but if your light is on when you "shut" the door, you may have the same problem.
