Hi, I have a Toshiba A60 Equium that wont start up. Currently, when powering up, the blue powerlight around the power button illuminates, I can here the dvd rw initilise but the screen stays blank and the machine does not make any other startup sounds. It does not beep, etc. I can not switch it off either and have had to remove mains power and the battery. This problem is consistent. Prior to this: -------------- The problem originated when I attempted to update the HID device driver within Windows XP Device manager, I clicked the [update driver] button but the machine froze. After 10 minutes I powered down by holding the power button. It hasn't started up since. This all started with intermittent keyboard and mousepad/trackpad problems whereby the keyboard / or mouse failed to work intermittently, requireing restarts. Please help! Thank you.
Similar problem some time back and removing the battery for a while then re-inserting it did the trick.
It is worth a try.

It may be possible to startup in safe mode(press F8 on boot up) and highlight 'Last Known Good Configuration' or highlight 'Start Windows in Safe Mode. If this gets you up try a system restore to before you updated driver or look for the system recovery folder, normally on another partition of your hard drive, that is if you didn't get a recovery cd. If you are not able to get up and running you will need your Windows Installation Disc to either repair the system or do a complete re installation by putting in cd whilst you boot up. It may also be that your HDD is damaged and thats why you can hear the cd drive powering up, looking for a system disc, as it cannot find Windows.

If you cannot get started by your windows cd as last posted:
If you are not able to get up and running you will need your Windows Installation Disc to either repair the system or do a complete re installation by putting in cd whilst you boot up.
Then your cd drive is not working either and it's a full professional repair job, as no boot system; no cd boot; no chance of a look into possible faults.
Maybe new hardrive is the only answer, but still does'nt answer as to why you cant get into a post, only solution to that is to remove and replace bios battery if you can find it(either behind screen or ina plastic casing under keyboard or on the underside of laptop.

Hi Sandrew,
Thank you for your response however, all of your suggestions ignore the fact that the machine fails to even initiate the POST. (Power On Self Test) and therefore the following suggestions are not implementable, your solutions, whilst welcome, depend upon sucessful POST, and operating system boot - neither of which occur.
As stated in my first description, the screen remains blank, does not make any ohter startup sounds, and can not be turned off via the power button.
The only way to "turn off" is to eject the battery and remove mains power.
Even holding down the power button for 10 seconds fails to turn the machine off.
I cannot even make any BIOS changes, because hte machine does not even get that far.
In fact, prior to the problem, there is a mpoment at power-up when the black surface of the screen appears to "charge up" which I presume is part of the hardware starting up - but since the start of the problem described above, the screen does not even do that.
Thank you for your suggestions, but they are not relevant to this problem from what I can see.
Do you (or anybody else) have any other ideas / suggestions? All are welcome.
Thank you.
Hi Again Sandrew,
once again, thank you for your help.
It definitely isn't fesible to use a Windows re-installation CD - as previously stated, the system does not go as far as POST - therefore, no opportunity to re-install the OS, but then - I do NOT believe that the OS is at fault, I believe that this is a Hardware fault.
I think that you are right - it's a repair shop problem as I believe that either the bios / CPU / Motherboard is faulty.
