Tv is on as bright at it will go, and the pictures are still too dark
I have the tv on as bright as it will go and it is still too dark, especially with nightime scenes. What could be causing this and how can I fix it. I have had the tv for about 8-10 years. Everything else is great.

You can open the back and look for the focus block, this block has 6 knobs on it. 3 are for focus and 3 are for screen control. You will need to turn up the 3 screen control at slightly the same rate. If you are off balance you will have color problems, Do not turn up too high. Becareful, cause you will need set on to adjust. Do not touch anything else. If you move the focus by mistake then you will have to readjust. 3 Guns you will have to adjust one at a time, by covering the other two. Hope this helps!

Check the voltages that comes to the back light inverter, especially, the voltage from the main digital board that controls the brightness. If is found OK, be sure that the backlight inverter board is faulty. If not, the main baord. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. You may need a drive PCB. This PCB can cause the picture to be too bright, no brightness or picture too dark, intermittantly or permanantly. Do check the bulb though and see if it is foggy looking or dull especially if it has not been changed. Thanks for using Fixya.
It sounds that lamp in TV is weak and not throwing enough light to bright the screen for good image. How old is this TV and did you replaced its Lamp recently? If lamp has not been replaced yet or in last 2-3 years, replace it.
If this is a CRT-based TV and it's been played most of the time, you may have a bad picture tube, especially if strong red colors bleed to the right. CRT's dim with use, unlike LCD or plasma. But it could also be trouble in the video circuits - none of this falls into the DIY category, unfortunately. High voltage involved, unless you're comfortable around it and want to try turning up the screen controls inside the TV. If you do, let me know - but "no response at all" from the external adjustments points to a more serious problem.
How many years is your TV now? Usually TV has its life span, there comes a time that it happens. And need to look for a technicians, cause some of theme can still be repair by adjusting the brightness inside your TV.
