Brother xl-3100 users manual / guide

Sounds as though the top thread is not being captured by the rotary hook. Check for a bent needle and clean bobbin, hook, and feed dog area.

Click on the Home Sewing Machine link and then the XL series. The manual for the XL-3520 is shared with a few other models and the link I found was http://support.brother.com/g/b/manualtop.aspx?c=ca&lang=en&prod=hf_xl3500t3510eus . This unit has a 2 year back to base warranty.

Try removing and replacing the needle.

Unfortunately machines with predominately plastic frames are prone to misalignment that even professionals will not bother repairing because it will re-occur quickly (I have been told).

Check that the arm is in place as it should be. and the needle is not bent.

I couldn't find a manual for the XL2027 but I did find one for the XL3027.

Worth looking at these two manuals to see if they are similar to your machine.
You could try contacting Brother (see the first link) as they may be able to help you find the exact manual for your machine.
