I've got a 1997 (very old) 32 inch Sony that has begun to flash a green screen and then shuts off. It takes a minute or two and then I can power it back on. Sometimes it stays on and other times it just shuts down again with the same green flash. I thought maybe it was the Direct tv/tivo box so I disconnected that and it still happened.
Just wondering... I'm sure I know what the answer is. Thank you.
No need to replace the tube just find a tv repairman to rejuvanate the picture tube cost about $50 to $75 dollars, it a laptop machine that burns the carbon off the elements, may last for a few months up to years more service.TODD

Re:
The average life of a picture tube now days is only 6 to 7 years, base on the symptom and the age of the set I hate to tell you but your picture tube is bad and it has to be replaced but a new picture tube for this set would cost more than a brand new television,I would suggest not to spend any money and invest in a new set.Sorry

It sounds to be a firmware trouble. Will be best to contact the authorized service center for Sony, rather than trying to do it by yourself, as it is a very skilled work, need both concentration and previous experience. google.com/+GopakumarGopalan
or a new lamp. you could first replace the lamp. the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.
Jar-Head, bad news, the picture tube has a mild short in the green cathode, tech can come out and try to restore it but it`s usually a futile attempt on sony tubes, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, BMW Rider
Its the BULB people! You need to change it every 3 to 5 years! I have had my sony 55" for 6 years... I had Best Buy come out 3 years ago, changed the bulb... it worked fine. Just started flasshing and shut its self off and back on again. Time for another bulb.
