I have a GE microwave jvm2070bh02 and it worked great up until las night. Then it sounded like the motor was making a much louder noise. It looked as if it was working but no microwaves were coming out - would not heat anything. Any idea what the problem is and is it worth getting repaired?
It may not be worth repair, the sound, sort of a weird grinding kind of noise is probably the Magnetron. That can make that kind of noise when it fails, often accompanied by a strange odor and no 'heat'. The part usually retails about $70, and I always recommend a new Capacitor and Diode set, another $35. You need to take the unit down, take it almost to bare-bones, replace the parts, and reverse the process.
DANGER!
CAREFUL! THE CAPACITOR STORES UP TO 2500 VOLTS DC EVEN WHEN UNPLUGGED FOR EXTENDED PERIODS!!!
You can get open box/ scratch/dent/bumped for about $100 for simple models at your local "BB" or similar appliance place.
It's had it's day and is worn out best get down to Walmart and git yerself a new one for around $100.
SOURCE: Microwave not heating food and is making loud noise.
You have burned out the magnatron (heating element) which is common on GE microwaves. most service companies will charge about 200-250 to replace it
SOURCE: My GE spacemaker microwave won't heat and makes an unusual sound
I have the same problem on my oven- model JVM1640WB and called an appliance repairman who is honest and reliable (I've used him before). He said the problem is with the electrode, to fix it is roughly $300. He recommended buying a new microwave rather than fixing it.
SOURCE: turns on but not heating food sounds a bit louder
Hi, this is common in most microwaves. this abnormal noise is coming from a faulty Magnetron. this device is responsible for the heating process and, it is damaged and not heating at all at this point.Simply replace the Magnetron and, this unit will start to heat once more.

With the details you described, the high voltage diode might be shorted( usually HVR 1X). It is connected from the Capacitor and the chassis, or else the capacitor is the one at fault, but not common .
SOURCE: loud pop and microwave doesn't heat anymore
I have a GE Profile Spacemaker model JVM3670WF001, purchased I think in 2003. Pop sound, no Heat. Light goes on, carousel goes around,
