Our polaroid under the counter tv is only a few months old. We have had a problem getting the picture on when the tv was turned off at the tv rather than the remote. However, we were always able to get the picture back, at least until last week. A guest in our home turned the tv off at the set. Since then, we have sound, but cannot get a picture. That is true whether we are trying to use the cable box or to play a dvd. The screen does not light. We called polaroid, but all we could get out of them was that we have a problem with the set.

...the answer is correct...the power inverter for the cathode backlight is a complete failure with these Polaroid models.  Polaroid should really step up and fix a known problem.  Mine was purchased as a gift and not opened until the worthless 3 month warranty expired.  Didn't work out of the box!!!! I will never purchase a Polaroid product again since they obviously don't care about the consumer and sell a product that they know was defective.

The backlight for the LCD is bad. The LCD portion is working but the flouresent tube circuit which provides the white background is not. This is usually a problem with the transformer that powers the tube. This can be repaired by a tech. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you have a backlight problem. To verify this, turn on the set and dim the lights in the room. Take a bright flashlight and shine it on the screen. If you see a faint picture, you either have a back inverter or a bad backlight bulb.

First, average life on these sets is about 3 to 4 years at best and only boards are sold so even if you can pin point the board (no individual parts are sold) it is likely if will not get fixed and doing so is a bad investment as all the boards are now old.

My 61" hitachi rear proj has a very dark picture.

It sounds that lamp in TV is weak and not throwing enough light to bright the screen for good image.
How old is this TV and did you replaced its Lamp recently?
If lamp has not been replaced yet or in last 2-3 years, replace it.

No picture but has sound

The problem can be caused by a bad sustain board (Ysus Zsus) , the popping sound is often caused by a capacitor blowing up.
The TV must be taken apart and tested before eventually replacing sustain boards.
