How to replace the door bellows seal ?

The front door bellows seal is broken ,would you please to help me how to replace it? Also looking for service manual for duet front load washer so I can replace the bellows - specifically my model is the GHW9100L but my guess is many of the service issues are identical.

Seems simple enough. But two questions:

1 - what is "washing up fluid"

2 - The clamp that holds the seal to the cabinet looks a bit daunting. It is as you describe - a Wire circle with a spring. How do you suggest I prise it off. just pull on it with pliers? I am not worried about damaging the bellows I am removing, so I am willing to try brute strength. But I am more concerned about putting the clamp back on after replacing the bellows. any suggestions on technique to do so efficiently without damage to the new bellows?

This is general for all door seals - all are much the same.
disconnect from mains. take lid off
prise off the clamp holding seal to cabinet - usually a wire circle with a spring - and peel seal off cabinet. fold seal back inside drum
seal is held onto lip of tub with what is really a giant hose clip. undo this and the seal will come away from tub.
on new seal, lubricate the slot in the seal that goes onto the lip of drum with washing up fluid.
starting at top, enter the slot in seal on lip of tub. work your way round in both directions pushing slot onto lip. this is the hard part and it may take more than one attempt.
when seal is on all the way round, replace the clamp.
refix seal to cabinet (easy to do) and refit outer clamp.
test for leaks on rinse as water level is higher

I have a frontloading Kenmore washer purchased in 2003. The door will not close, and there is a wire ring that fell off. Can I fix this myself? It looks simple but I don't want to make the problem worse...

The wire ring you are referring to is called the front bellow clamp. This is the clamp the holds the bellow (door seal) in place. This may be causing the problem you are experiencing with the washer door not closing properly. The following link explains how to access and reinstall a door bellow and clamps:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574186-installing_a_door_bellow_on_a_front_load

As long as the spring is still intact on the wire hoop and not broken, the clamp can still be used.

After UNPLUGGING the washer, skip down to step 12. This is explains how to reinstall the wire hoop. Just make sure the bellow seal fits snug all the way around the door perimeter. Then, fit the wire hoop into the groove around the seal. It helps if you have a second person hold it in place as you install it.

Overloading the washer is the most common cause of the front bellow clamp coming off. If there are too many articles in the washer, they can become lodged in the door area and pull on the bellow. Always follow your manufacturer's recommendations in the owner's manual for proper loading.

If the door still won't close properly, you may have a broken door latch mechanism. Check the latch pin on the door and the latch on the door facing and make sure they are still mechanically sound and not broken. If the latch needs replace, the following link explains how:

Torn rubber gasket

The front door seal is referred to as the "bellow". They do wear out with age and can also become mishapened from repeated pressure from the door being closed. Over time the bellow can stretch or develop rips and tears and begin to leak. If the bellow is leaking, or no longer sealing correctly, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574186-installing_a_door_bellow_on_a_front_load

NOTE: If you leave the door OPEN between washes this will help prevent constant pressure on the door seal which can stretch it out of shape over time. It is also beneficial to allow the wash tub to air out to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Also DO NOT overload the washer. This can contribute to premature wear of the door bellow and cause rips and tears.

How to replace the door bellows seal ?

The following link explains how to replace a door bellow:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385211-replacing_door_bellow_whirlpool_duet

Another method involves removing the washer top panel and working down through the top of the washer. The method I have described, offers the best open access, however. If you have questions along the way, please let me know. I hope you find this informaiton helpful.

How to replace the door bellows seal ?

Unfortunately the service manual will not tell you how to replace the bellows.

Tilt the machine back to create more space between the front on the door and the outer drum. Remove the screws for the kickplate and remove the kickplate for easier access. Open the door and remove the spring clamp holding the bellows to the door opening lip. Push the bellows into the drum to get access to the outside/ rear of the bellows (where it connects to the drum). There you will find another clamp which you loosen/ remove with a socket. Some models have an overfill tube on the top of the bellows (remove it from the bellows). At this point you should be able to completely remove the bellows.

Align the new bellows to the outer tub. Attach and tighten the inner clamp (be careful not to over tighten and periodically check the bellows and clamp placement as you're tightening to make sure it doesn't slip off). Attach the overfill tube (if equipped). Lay the machine back to level and install the front of the bellows to the door opening lip. Re-install the spring clamp by starting at the top and working your way down both sides (may be easier with 2 pairs of hands). Be careful not to overstretch the spring on the clamp.

Test with a quick fill and let it agitate for a few minutes to ensure there are no leaks (be ready to hit cancel and have a few towels just in case it leaks). Re-install the kickplate, make sure machine is still leveled correctly by trying to rock it diagonally from the top. Enjoy clean clothes!
