Hi I am having a similar problem. I can read write cd but can't read/write DVD's in my sony DRU700A dvd drive. I tried to run the same DVD that I burnet from this writer and it didn't run although it was working fine before.
I tried to read all different format of DVDs it can't read any, tried to write +/-R DVDs, from nero it keeps asking to insert blank DVD.
I am running Windows XP service pack-2. I tried to uninstall and re-install the driver from device manager. Diddn't help.
Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Hi There that is a hardware failure inside the unit there are two different lasers in the one head one for cd and one for dvd it sound like the dv d head has failed if the unit is new or under warrenty its time to speak to your supplier or if not bite the bullet and invest in anew unit
INSTALL VISTA ANY WAY the problem is that windows can use the drive..
BOOT OF THE VISTA DISC
enter setup when the system boots up
go to booting options
and select the dvd rom as the first boot device
ensure the vista disc is in the drive
and save and exir setup
it will tell you to pree any key to boot from cd/dvd
and it will install vista without any hassle
