SOURCE: When starting my DV4000 - the screen is dark other than a cursor in the left corner.

That error indicates a hard drive problem. You probably have to replace the hard drive.

i think your system's files is corrupted due to improper shut down or sudden lost of system power.so better do fresh installation of operating system or do recovery by booting up windows xp from cd rom.

SOURCE: New HDD inserted into Pavilion ZD7000 - will not boot from XP CD

Try your old HDD in it and see if that works. If it does work then nothing is damaged except your DVD drive/Controller. Try putting the new HDD in another computer, installing windows then putting it back in the HP. If all else fails then flash the bios with an updated image and see if that rectifies the problem.

SOURCE: won't boot

I had this too. It kept happening after I would install updates. I think the problem turned out to being that my harddrive (only 4GB) had run out of space.

The way I ended up fixing it was to turn the power off by holding down the button, turn it back on and hold the F9 key. This allowed me to "restore factory defaults" and it booted up again. I lost all the changes I had made, so if you had settings saved, this may not be your best option.

If it is a harddrive space issues, I would recommend getting to the console (CNTRL+ALT+T) and then typing "sudo synaptic" to get to the package manager. You can then remove packages that you no longer need or want to use (like the kids games, possibly Skype). This stuff is a little advanced, so if you're not sure of what you're doing, you may end up changing something you didn't mean to and needing to start back over again by restoring defaults.

SOURCE: I have Hp Dv6700 laptop,

may be the problem is in your memory, try to remove your memory (RAM), it located in a back cover of your laptop, you need to open the screw first, try to clean up your memory with a pencil eraser, if it not help try to replace with a new ram.

The screen on my compaq presario cq56 is black

The problem is caused by the inverter board, "just below the screen" is more than likely the problem, or it is the backlight behind the LCD display, "built in" less likely.

Compaq presario cq56 flashes from red start screen to cursor back and forth and cant open f11

Sounds like your boot files or system files has either a corrupt file or missing file.

You will need a repair disk or system disk to remedy this. Put the disk in the cd drive and boot from it. You wan to get to a dos prompt (black screen with white lettering) and run the Check Disk utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

I get a sceen message on my daughters compaq presario , a picture comes on screen of the keypad for the mouse with a red line through it and then the mouse freezez

You can try booting into Safe Mode to see if the problem persists. You do this by pressing/tapping 'F8' when you see the bios screen while the computer is starting up.
