Won't print black

I have tried re-installing my printer driver but my printer still, spookily, refuses to print black (although it will print some on the test page) Would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Same thing happend to mine. Have not sorted the problem yet but you can get it to print if you change the Ink usage settings. Go into your printer properties, select maintenance tab and click on the Ink Usage Control button.Tick "Use Composite Black" then ok. This will enable you to print out your docs at least.

I have set the default print to black only and use only black printing. However, the colour cartridges also get used up for no reason

HelloOne tip I know is try not to turn the printer power on and off, every time you turn the printer on it runs through a head leaning type process, sucking ink out every time.
As far as getting it to print with just the black cartridge in the advanced settings there should be a check box for this, although i have heard from some of our customers that this feature may be dis-able in later driver versions
I hope this helpsRegardsGrant

Will not print black although new black cartridge loaded. Cyan empty.

Canon printers tend to refuse to print if any of the tanks is empty. Replace the Cyan.

Ink cartridge (not) installed properly

For the Canon iP1800 printer are you sure you're using the 30 for black and 31 for color?

And make sure they "click" when installed. That should confirm that they're nice and tight in their ink compartments.

Besides that, maybe reinstalling the printer drivers could do something?
