I refurbish and upgrade old junk computers that folks throw away, then donate them to poor families with young children, and to poor inner city schools for their class rooms. I have a plethora of old out dated so yesterday, parts and equipment. Unfortunately I do not nor can I find the special cable I need to complete this computer fo a deserving child. CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE???? Anyone have or know where I can get this Cable. At board level I has a small laptop style connector. Signed DESPERATELY SEEKING IDE CABLE. LOL

If the hard drive is your system drive you want to connect it to the IDE1 connector. Color coding isn't standard, so you'll need to look at the board for labels screened on. Both connectors are the same, so if you get it wrong you won't damage anything. The computer will come on, but you may get error messages when the operating system doesn't start up. If that happens, just shut the power off and plug the cable into the other connector.

Leave the cable connection as it is. That is, one ribbon cable for the 2 dvd drives and the original cable for the old hard drive. You dont need to set the jumper on the second hdd. It has to be set to 'cable select'. Then make sure to connect the second hard drive to the middle port of the ide cable. Don't forget to connect the power connector to the drive. It should work that way.
Two ports on the motherboard
primary ide controller port (for master and slave hard drives. both drives jumpers should be set to cable select. then make sure to connect the right ends of the cable to the drive. middle port is for slave. port on the end is for master. check the power connectors for both drives.)
secondary ide controller port (for 2 dvd drives.)

This means that you have an external video card (which is not outside the computer). This video card will be plugged into the motherboard. That message is saying that the port on the back of the computer that your monitor is plugged into is the wrong one. You need to look for another port on the back of the computer.
Here is a picture of a VGA port that you should use if you have a VGA cable to connect the monitor (Blue Ends).

So depending on the cable and connections that are available on your computer and your monitor depends on what you have to use. I hope that wasn't too confusing. Let me know if you need more info.

it might be the Network adapter causing problem, please check in device manger if the drivers are not showing yellow mark or red.
If any, then install the drivers from Dell Drivers & Downloads

Will most probably be a setting on your network card. Go in to device manager and select your network, make sure it says there device is working properly. If so right click it and select properties then advanced. Now normally link speed and duplex should work fine but not always. In the dropdown list try another setting like 10 baseT full duplex or 100 baseT full duplex. Hope this helps .....Scott

This is a special ribbon cable. It is standard size IDE connector at the drive. however the connector at the drive ad on the main board are not standard. They are micro sized that fit a micro sized ribbon. tried using a few of my own made ribbons. Im close to getting one of my creations to work LOL Problem is the size. They put 40 pins for IDE into a ribbon 7/16 in wide. would rather I could find one to buy :P.
