Usb hub Thanks for the info, but I have another question. I get it that I need a usb hub to have both printers available to use rather than unplugging one to use the other. Thanks for the website. I found a couple different ones in a department store here for about $30 each. I'll probably pick one up on the weekend. I'm just wondering though, if when I uninstalled both drivers for both printers and only installed the laser printer, why it wouldn't print from the usb port on the back of my tower. Wouldn't the fact that I uninstalled both and only installed the laser printer "erase" what the computer thought I was using before and revert back to the original hook up of just the laser printer?

The answer is yes your PC will not look for any previous drivers to work the printer, but the USB ports on the motherboard don't work on the printer driver, they work from a usb controller, which is where the problems can stem from them not liking hardware change. Its not a software driver issue but a connection issue, i have it regular. Did the pc say that it found new hardware, then continued to install drivers and then informed you that your hardware is installed and ready to use.(pop up on task bar) If you put your printer into another usb port the PC would need to find the drivers again, it does not know that your printer has already been set up in another port. But you must install both printer drivers ready for when you plug them both in(one at a time.) I'm sorry, but i'm sure it's as clear as mud.

How do I convert a printer to wifi operation ?

The best option for this is to attach the printer via USB to a Network Printer Hub.
Printer Hubs attach to the network through wireless and convert the printer to be available through that network to any PC.
Some routers also act as a Printer Hub, if you are happy to have your printer located beside the router.
Look in Google for Printer Hubs for more details and local availability.

HP LaserJet 2430 Printer Will Not Print since USB Power Surge Error

INSUFFICIENT POWER - USB PORT
If you get an error message "Insufficient power to operate USB device" when you plug a USB device into the computer's USB port or the un-powered USB hub that is attached to the computer's USB port, then this device is drawing excessive current that the USB port cannot supply. The maximum output from an USB port is 500mA. In case such as this, you need to purchased a powered USB hub and connect this hub into the computer's USB port and then connect the USB device into this powered USB hub.

Hi, the side mounted USB ports on my NEC Multisync 90gx2 monitor do not work

The USB ports on the LCD is a USB hub. To use these ports you have to connect the input of the USB Hub of the LCD to one of the USB ports of the computer through a USB cable. You need a simple USB Printer Cable, which is easily available from any Computer Accessories store. Below is the picture of the cable. The normal USB plug (on the left) goes to the USB Post of the PC and the square one at the right should be connected to the LCD.

I keep gertting this message "communication not available". I have done all the toubleshooting suggestions. The orange astrisk mark continues to blink. the cable has no kinks in it. what is my next step,...

try uninstalling all the usb hubs from the device manager and restart the computer but note that before you do that all the external devices should be unplugged. like printer , modem and anyother if there is any.
once you restart the computer automatically the hubs will get installed. also check with other usb ports.
if all this will not work then uninstall the printer driver compleately and after restarting the computer reinstall the printer driver .

When I connect the printer I get a hub overload message. I can't reinstall because the computer connect manager doesn't see the printer. It did work until recently

Believe it or not, this problem is actually related to the computer, not the printer.

I can tell by the error message that you are plugged into a USB hub. Unplug it from the hub, then plug it directly into your computer's back USB ports, not the front ones. It will probably work now.

To properly fix the issue, you need to purchase a powered USB hub.

Essentially this happens because the printer is power hungry. Passive USB hubs like the one you have can only provide enough juice that your computer gives it. Since your computer doesn't want to fry out by "overloading" the voltage on the line, it reduces the power and throws that error message.

Now, if you are getting this message on a laptop computer OR you plugged the printer into the back ports and the unit STILL does not work, the printer or USB cable has a short and needs to be replaced.

Good luck. Please rate my response or post a comment on your original question to allow me to further assist you.

Another question for sandrew

Yes and No, unless you manually change a pc settings, it may search for items in pre-programmed ports, depending on what windows versions you are running, sometimes a pc will not pick up new hardware attached either, so it wont recognise it and it will revert then, but you can fix this by reinstalling the one you want again and it may pick it up then, pc's are temperamental!!! Go to printers in your control panel and see what printers are actually hooked up and where and if they are in ready mode.
