Emerson DVd with Video Cassette Recorder EWR20V5

When I attempt to record anything. It doesn't matter if its from the vcr or from tv. The recording error message appears and states it cannot record to this disc. Even though I have recorded to it several times before. The system is only about 10 months old. Please help

When I put in an unused disc for the first time( a maxell -RW) the screen at the bottom shows LOADING and moves across the screen from left to right until complete, the it shows FORMATTING after which it shows its ready for recording. However, lately it gets about 4% of the FORMATTING and flashes "RECORDING ERROR:Cannot record on this disc" I'm using the same disc I've always used but now the recorder doesn't like them. After contacting the tech help they suggested I use a DVD "recording" disc cleaning disc(not the "player" dvd disc cleaner) Evidently , the recorder has two laser lens and a player only one, therefore using a dvd player disc cleaner misses the recording laser lens when cleaning the player laser lens. I have visited several electronics stores to locate the "recorder"dvd disc cleaner but I'm told they're on a certain aisle next to the "hen's teeth"and when I get there I find they're all gone as are the "hen's teeth" as well My particular unit is the EWR20V5 emerson. Can you help me? If not I may use this unit to check the pattern spread of my new 12ga shotgun and file it in a land fill for a hundred or so years. Bill

The problem I am having is the DVD recorder says it can't record to the dvd, wheather I am recording from tv or vcr. and the vcr tapes I am recording from is my own making, and not copywrited. when I am trying to play a dvd the player will not play it, and the ones I recorded on my computer which are dvd's the dvd try's to format the dvd then says it can't find it

I have the same problem. [Recording Error E4 54037380 - Can not record on this disk]. I have cleaned the system over and over again and I have disconnected the system hours at a time. I also started receiving this error message after 10 months. PLEASE HELP!

Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time.

I don't know if I have this exact model, but let assume I do. I have the same problem and have had this unit for at least 3 years. Recently the problem return for me when I run out of disks. Back when I had this problem, I contact Emerson or whoever the techs were, and was sent a disk with instructions to call back when ready to install. It was a flash ROM( I beleive) fix to allow this then 4X max recorder to accept 8X disks. I recently found some 8X Verbatum disks that I bought. I still have this record problem intermittantly. Today I restarted a record 3 times before it proceeded. The best bet is probably to buy the lowest speed disks possible and cross your fingers. The sales person at Best Buy told me it shouldn't matter since the range is 1x-16x on most disks and that they should work. But, I think there is something to the 8x max disks.

Good Luck.

I purchased my EWR20V5 unit in December 2006. After 10 months usage it developed several problems

  1. Recording error message appears when trying to record onto DVDs.
  2. Playback error message appears when playing prerecorded disks (NetFlix, BlockBuster, etc.
  3. Playback error message sometimes appears when playing disks burned on this unit.
  4. I cannot finalize disks burned on this unit.
I've almost thrown this unit out several times, but I wasn't sure if I had to get the same unit to finalize my disks?. Is there a solution for all these problems?

Try using 8x and lower DVDs and -R ones; try cleaning with CD cleaning disk and then try recording a few min again. If that doesn't help try unplugging and waiting about 30min then put in disk that was previously recorded and go to last item and play it to end (if 2hr long skip to last skip and then play until it finishes) - now try just recording a few min using the manual DVD record button and see if error comes up again - usually this unplugging somehow resets everything. Hope this helps ya'll.

EWR20V5 loads but get "error message" Using Verbatum 4xDVD+RW disc with downloaded pictures from PC using Windows 10. Recorder works and video displayed on other discs.

Unfortunately, the EWR20V5 does not handle DVD +R or DVD +RW discs for recording. It can play back some of these discs, when recorded and finalized on another recording device. However, it may not recognize some DVD +R/+RW discs at all. This recorder recognizes all DVD -R/-RW discs. This is a common manufacturing design for DVD/VCR recorders.

See the first page of the Quick Guide for the EWR20V5 for the disc limitations: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/46971/Emerson-Ewr20v5.html . I hope this helps.

Copy from vhs to dvd- want to speed process ???

I'm afraid, VHS tape have to be playback on standard speed for good picture and sound and dvd would also burn accordingly.
Noo way for fast dubbing because VHS tape video is analog signal that changed into digital signal in circuits to write on dvd disc.
I hope you understand how this dubbing works.

Emerson EWR20V5 DVD Recorder

you have to have a dvd RW that says write speed 1x -2x. this is an older dvd. most newer ones are 8-16x speed. Sony makes them and you can get them at most stores. you have to read the back.
