Brother MFC-5440CN Printer Problem

My Brother MFC 5440CN prints 2 lines down every page when autofeeding to make copies. I tried cleaning everything, changing ink cartridges... The machine is less than a year old.

Mergatroid had the solution to multiple streaks when using the document feeder. Cleaned the small strip of glass and Viola! no more streaks.

    Thanks for the solution.

I have a Brother MFC-J615W all-in-one printer and everything prints out in Blue, what's wrong?

  • Anonymous Mar 23, 2014

replaced drum, cleaned all rollers, cleaned glass including small one on the side. Still every time I scan I have three lines down page. I am very frustrated. Bad thing is my husband's machine which is the same as mine and both bought at the same time and his is doing same thing.

If this only happens when you are copying.

1. Your scanner glass is dirty. Open the lid, use windex to clean the flatbed. Look on the left side. You should see a strip of glass, with the scanner sitting under it. This strip is used when the document feed is being used. Make sure it is clean. Most common problem is getting a little whiteout or the sticky residue from scotch tape on this glass, which causes lines down your copies.

Clean it with alcohol which will dissolve the sticky stuff and the whiteout.

If this does not solve the problem, the CCD scanner in your machine might be going bad.

Will not receive faxes or copy Fax line rings but the machine says its receiving but nothing will print out and it won't copy pages either I've tried turning the machine off for up to 5 minutes,...

To begin troubleshoot, you should set the machine to basic Fax/Tel mode only.
1 If it is not illuminated in green, press (Fax). 2 Press Menu/Set, 2, 1, 2. 3 Press ? or ? to select how long the MFC will ring to alert you that you have a voice call (20, 30, 40 or 70 seconds). Press Menu/Set. 4 Press Stop/Exit. Even if the caller hangs up during the pseudo/double-ringing, the MFC will continue to ring for the set time.
After you confirm your Brother MFC-5440CN is able to receive fax then you can pick one of the 4 modes as describe on the owner manual.
You can download it HERE Detail Information is on 3-10

My printer wont print even after changing ink and cleaning

When cleaning doesn't help, you need a new printhead. Around $89.00 now and then you add labor. They sell a new MFC 490 for around $120.00 with a year warranty.

Lost Print solved by repeated cleaning. No solution to the single feed problem yet.

Solid black line down the document when scanning

are you using the autofeeder to feed your documents?
if yes, open the top cover and clean both glasses (big and small).
and take the drum out, move the blue panel to clean up your drum.
after that should be working fine.

Fix ink cartridge
I had same problem. I must have ran the clean cycle more than 30-50 times over a period of days. That never made any difference. I was about to toss the whole thing but figured I would try one more thing. If it didn't work I would be in no worse shape. Here is what I did.
Took an almost empty black cartridge and inject a lot of 100% Acetone to dilute ink. Left some black in it since I didn't want to think it was empty. Inserted this cartridge and ran the cleaning a few time. IT WORKED. I used my word processor program and filled a page with large bold font characters and printed a page or two. Each page cleared more nozzles. After doing this cleaning/printing a number of time, I put in the full good cartridge. Ran the cleaning a few time to eject any of the Acetone diluted ink. Ran the printed page a few time to remove more of the diluted ink.
Everything seems to work now.

Brother mfc MFC-5440CN magenta issues

If you have used generic ink the head is clogged and cant be cleaned anymore.

Last chance is to use original brother ink which has cleaning fluids within the ink. Run the cleaning procedure twice and simply print 10 PAGES afterwards. Wait A DAY AND TRY TO PRINT IN MAG AGAIN:

If there will be no mag. the ph is definitley clogged and needs replacement.

Brother 5440 mfc printer

1. Make sure the cartriges are name brand
2. make sure that you are placing each ink in the right slot.
3. Unplug it and press and hold the power button for like 20 seconds
4. plug it back in let it go though it's cycle,
5. try test page

Hope these tips work, if not please write back before rating me

Thick Black Line on my copies and faxes

Can't image it being anything but scan glass, if prints are fine, are you sure you cleaning scan glass(inside of where originals are fed)?

If so then scanner lamp faulty, but I've never come across it myself on this model.
