Screen goes white

A recurrent problem that is now happening more frequently. In the middle of working the screen goes totally white. Used to be able to fix by turning monitor quickly off and on, but now can take up to a dozen attempts, which can't be doing the monitor any good. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?

Have checked the video connections, which seems OK. Also, jiggling the connectors during a "white out" has no visible effect.

  • Peter Brown Oct 25, 2006

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

  • Peter Brown Feb 01, 2007

Updating driver made no difference. Also, problem still there when connected to different machines. Not keen on the smacking solution, even though it would relieve the frustration. Have taken it to the Benq service centre today - hopefully they will have a fix.
I'll post back when I find out what the problem was. Thanks all.

  • Peter Brown Feb 09, 2007

Repair technician said they "did some work to the power supply" to fix this problem. So far so good - hopefully it's a long term fix.

  • Peter Brown Mar 07, 2007

Well, wish it was better news, but the "fix" lasted about a week. Old problem has resurfaced, so back to the repair shop it goes :(

  • bs133140 Nov 15, 2007

Have a similar problem, there is no problem when the monitor is turned on, but when it's turned off by the button, or goes to sleep, the screen turns totally white,

I have a 15" dell monitor purchased in 2002. In the last 6 months the monitor will go completely white while I am using it. Usually turning the monitor off fixes it. Othertimes I have to use the degauss button (reset).

I have not done any other troubleshooting.

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2008

same problem here, the screen turned white i if i turn it off and on again, same problem but it flashes, like 3 second white, 3 seconds black, 3secondwhite,etc....

CPD-G410R 19 in.CRT Conventional Monitor. prblem is brightness is high and it not controlled by adjusting knobs or contrllers.

  • DenDiMarco May 21, 2008

I also have the problem where my screen will go white (possibly grayish white) for no apparent reason. Starting a few week earlier, I noticed that very occasionally the display would briefly (for less than one second)change to a "garbage" display. The change was so brief in duration, I was not able to get a good view of it.

Now, after using the computer for a period of time - I haven't timed it, but certainly less than an hour - the display changes suddenly to this gray-white color. So far it appears that turning the monitor power switch off and leaving it off for a while allows the display to return to its normal view, but only temporarily.

This is a Dell 15 flat panel monitor model E151FPb. Date of Mfg is May 2003.

Try opening the monitor up, and checking for bad solder joints on the VGA connector. This is actually a relatively common problem, when the monitor gets hot from use, the solder joint begins to fail until it cools down again.

Had similar problem with the dell monitor
Found that it was a dry solder joint
Looked at the control board and just about resoldered anything that looked pitted or off color

now works a treat 6 months now

I had exactly the same problem with a Samsung 204b LCD monitor. The problem was just a little fuse on the LCD board. Look on the board attached to the LCD (not on the power supply or video controller board) and the little fuse is usually identified on the board as F1 or something like that. The fuse is really really small, around 1mm per 1mm. You can replace it or just by pass it with a little solder point.

Try to smash it :-), it works. at least for a while. its not a problem with drivers or something else. there is hardware problem inside monitor. Maybe some of technitians should know.

I sent this to geeks on wheels. They say that the video card is not the issue. Seems to be a heat related issue. definetly the lcd monitor. I have been turning the monitor off when not in use and watching the time as it stays on. So far, no problems. I haven't looked at the soldering. I don't want to go there.

A

That problem is a bad video processor in the monitor failing.  The fix is to replace the main board.

I have the same montior. It has nothing to do with drivers, cables, graphic card, etc..it is monitor itself. You can check yourself by unplugging the monitor from computer and turn it on by itself. The self-diagnoisic should come on, but it doesn't. It is just pure, brillant white light emanating from the monitor. It come and go randomly. It is not back light since it shines quite brightly, and it is not pixel related, or scanning related. I believe it has to do something inside hardware that control information between cable interface and screen.

My Xerox is doing the same with a HP Media center. The problem is that the xerox does not like being turned off by Windows power management. I have altered it now so that windows never turns the monitor off and the problem has dissapeared.

It's Sony crap at work....it's not the drivers and it's not the PC card. It's a faulty connection inside: http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/[email protected]/detail?.dir=/My+Photos&.dnm=ex1.jpg

Hey Talon I am going to be with you bud, I am going to raise a stink about it too and if enough of us have this problem they will have to do something about it, maybe not with ours exactly but maybe with future models.

Sorry this is not a solution but I couldn't find a way to post otherwise.I am having the same problem with mine. I have been all over looking for a solution but Advueus Tech support leaves ALOT to be desired. Please post what you found out about it, I was thinking about taking mine to a shop also. I have just started getting the white screen within the last 2 weeks and I can still get it back to normal from the off and on solution but I have quit doing it and packed away the screen(going back to a 19" CRT I had locked away). I know it is not the graphics card I have all the most recent drivers from Nvidia. I have hooked the screen up to another computer with the same results. I am hoping it is not the screen going bad, I have not owned it that long. Good thread though and keep me posted on the outcome from the shop and mine might be seeing one soon too. Thanks.

None of these solutions will work. I have the same problem, the only thing that brings the monitor back is if I smack it on the side. I read somewhere online that this is due to a loose wire/bad soldering.

A

Anonymous

If you are using an LCD display, this is ussually indicative of the power electronics in the monitor being bad. Some places can fix that for ~$90-$100 but I'd just go and get a new monitor. They are pretty cheap these days.

Hi. Im having this same problem but w/ a ViewSonic VX-800, connected to my MSI 8500GT graphics card. I uninstalled my graphics card and connected my monitor to the motherboards VGA port and so far so good. With the graphics, I would get the white blank scrn. like 35-40 minutes into use. So i assume my video card is the problem. RMA time

Certainly sounds like a driver issue, check your cards/onboard graphics make; and download latest drivers. Are you able to pinch a monitor off a friend to try and pin it to a monitor or graphics problem? You may have done this but apologies as i did not read initial thread.

SOURCE: my monitor turns white when i turn it on every

Your monitor is about to go out. It may be a faulty bulb if an older monitor or if a newer one which utilizes a plasma or lcd screen, the liquid crystals maybe going bad or the light source could be going bad as well. When LCD's or Plasmas start going bad, the best bet is to get a new one because to fix one is almost as expensive as purchasing a newer one.

Testimonial: "That sounds like what is happening, I just needed confirmation. It is an old monitor, about four years. Time for a new one I guess. Thank you"

This isn't an easy solution, my friend. Go to this website and read what so many others are saying about the same problem. When you ger to this webpage, go to the link for the white screen problem, it's the same one you're having. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-51640-laptop-screen-goes-white
I wish I could give you a simple solution, but there isn't one, sorry. These days it's usually cheaper to replace than fix, unless you get lucky.
