I would be very grateful for help. I have just purchased a Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 and whilst installing the software, at the point where it asks for the USB cable to be inserted, a dialogue appeared saying "no camera detected" (we have tried various USB ports). Conversely, balloon messages appeared at the bottom of the screen saying that devices had been detected. When I use Skype the camera does not turn on, nor does the sound come through the head-phones.

This sometimes happens with the cd driver, uninstall your driver first, the try loading this driver http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/downloads/software/US/EN,CRID=1794,contentid=11022. Just check that when Windows says device is detected, see if it actually states your camera make and model, then says, your hardware is installed and ready to use, and NOT your hardware is installed but may not work correctly. If you still have problems, see this page, as there are a few workarounds. http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=534&p_created=1087233145&p_sid=tDSxcPki&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTQyMiZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD13aWxsIG5vdCBpbnN0YWxs&p_li=&p_topview=1

Try re installing the drivers as that is what will enable the video effects or better still try a similair thing within windows movie maker 2 and see if all goes to plan.
