Western Digital 500G Book drive

HELP! I am a photographer who has backed up thousands of photos onto my Western Digital 500G Book. It worked great for several months and now, it turns itself off randomly and my Windows XP desktop doesn't even see it! I am really concerned about losing my data - what can I do??

    I have managed to recover my photographs...however....my XP still does not recogize the drive nor can I format it.....HELP ANYONE.

    windows dectects but pauses on found new hardwear,
    wont dectect in any partion softwear run from boot, such as

    Hiren’s BootCD 9.7
    however i am in process of taking it apart to see if it the usb side thats the problem

Try with R-Studio software and never 100% beleve to any backup medium.

I just bought one of these as well and after having it a week it crapped out on me. I'll try downloading the driver and se what happens.

Hi stuhubbard. "joul" posted this fix in response to my WD issues. Check it out....

I had the same problem today and I solved it...
Go to the Western Digital official website, choose your model and download the driver for win98..it works magically with XP. Fast and easy :)


My WD fixed itself, but this seems like a likely fix if you are still having problems. Perhaps let "joul" know if this is useful for you.

Hello. I understand how hard it is to read some of those instructions. Here is a link for you to copy/ paste that takes you to Western Digital. They bought Hitachi. This is the PDF instructions that you need to be able to install the software correctly to do your backup.

Thanks for searching our database first, sorry you didn't find the answer yet but let me remedy that.

If you're getting power but no lights either the My Book circuit board or the drive circuit board has failed. Either way avoid Best Buy and Geek Squad, I have heard way too many customer complaints about both when it comes to data recovery lately.

First stop in at your local PC shop and ask the techs there to remove the drive from your My Book and test it in a new enclosure. If it works there, you're done, buy the enclosure.

If that fails and the drive is at fault, reply back with your location(Country, State and City) and I will refer you to an actual data recovery pro near you for data recovery.

500G my book clicks and it is not recognized by my computer

Did you recently drop it? Usually the clicking noise means there is a slight bent metal object that is hitting when it tried to read. There is nothing to fix it. You'll will have to purchase a new one if it still doesn't decided to read

My Computer lists my new MY BOOK as two drives.

Hi,

It sounds like you have the My Book Mirror edition. If that is the drive that you wanted it is suppose to do the mirroring. Otherwise, I'd contact WD and explain that they sent you the wrong drive.

It could be a hard drive crash. There are places in your area that can fix these and restore your data. Check in Google and see if there is one in your area.
