Locked into progressive scan AND Setup is Unavailable

The VCR player works just fine. DVD plays audio, but I cannot see a picture because Progressive Scan Mode remains on the screen. SETUP displays on the "window" when I use the remote, but there is no setup menu displayed on the tv.... it just keeps saying Progressive Scan Mode. Also, the audio is in a foreign language. I have lost my manual. I tried a suggestion make elsewhere in FixYa to hold the Stop button for 5 seconds. The DVD DOES stop playing, but the Progressive Scan Mode continues to be displayed.

The key is to make sure you REMOVE all DVDs and VCRs from the player, then hold the stop button on the unit down for 5 seconds.

I had the exact same problem (was moving the system from the Big Screen HD in the basement into the bedroom) and was stuck on Progressive mode, as the bedroom TV did not have HD inputs. The way to fix it is to hold STOP for 5 seconds, but NOT on the remote. Instead hold STOP for 5 seconds on the actual front panel of the system. I did this and it worked no problem for me.

This solution will also work for GoldStar DVR1000! make sure no DVD or tapes are in the player press and hold stop button and it releases you from Progressive scan mode. After searching the web for hours for this model got desperate and was trying fixes for other brands and models, this one worked. Thanks koolanit

No more solutions are necessary! THANK YOU koolanit! I have an old "go video" DVD/VCR player that mysteriously ended up on Progressive Scan Mode for a week. I was just about to throw it out forever, when I read your solution.

I looked up the model number you gave for your unit and Zenith says theres no such model. Go to the Zenith link and insert the complete model number to get an owners manual for free. Good Luck http://www.zenithservice.com/ PS Please dont forget to rate this thread.

Can't turn off progressive scan on my dvd/vcr player.

Page 18 of the operating manual cites this, to reset to default viewing mode:

1) Remove any disc from the unit and close the disc
tray. See that “dISC” is displayed on the display
window.
2) Press STOP and hold it for more then five
seconds before releasing it. The video output will be
restored to the standard setting and a picture will
once again be visible on a conventional analog TV or
monitor.

If that doesn't work, please let me know.

The DVD section is set to output as component video / progressive scan. You need to set it to either S or composite video output which is how your VCR is hooked up. Thats why you have no picture.

Please go to the following link for an exact definition and how it is applicable to your situation. Please read all 3 pages of information!!!!! The short of it is, is that your TV may not be set up for progressive scan. Try turning off progressive scan on your DVD player's menu and see if this works.
