After turning on the tv the audio works but the picture was distorted and then I turned the tv off and back on again.
The screen was black with a line across, so i turned the tv off and back on again and the screen is complete black with audio working. Now there is no picture just sound.
is it worth repairing

There are several causes for loss of vertical deflection ( symptom: horizontal line across the screen) you might also check the electrolytic capacitors adjacent to the vertical ic. (assuming resoldering the vertical ic does not work) Some JVC sets also have a bad zener diode think its D715 part# mtzj75

One thing you should not do with electronic devices which have a start up proceedure is to turn the power off, and then on again without a wait of about five minutes.
Some equipment manuals warn you about this, and specify a longer period.
The start-up has to have time to reset.
It will be more likely to reset if you do not leave it on standby,
and even unplug it.
In your TVs case you need to describe the distorted picture as it may give a clue to a fault, or incorrect start-up.
The horizontal line indicates the frame timebase had stopped working.
No picture could be a fuse blown inside the set, or a timed cutout which may reset after a time.
Try after several hours to see if it comes on.
If it is just the frame timebase (vertical) it is worth repairing.

Ur tv are developing a problems call convergence,it dying. The convergence board the 2 STK convergence ICS,and some or all it resistors are dying. These parts are must be changed to solved the convergence problems. The shop will cost u $300-350 for the parts and labors.
The old video card has seen better days, methinks. All those symptoms lead one to conclude it needs a 'substitute' to enter the field, or call a long TV time out(too much pro and super bowl isms, eh?)..
Can you post a picture of what the video is doing? It shounds like a pincushion problem, but it may be convergence amp as well. A picture could clarify it for me so I would know which direction to assist you in.
the tv turns on fine,
but after 5 - 30 min or so, "sometimes MORE " the picture all of a sudden go's black. Sound is ok
it is 100% loose contact problem.
1 please check for any connector or print for loose.
2 in signal processor ic there might be loose.
remember there is no component failure.
pick up the volume just a bit and so for the speakers
and see if it continues to happen
if soo try by putting all settings as normal( not your normal the tv's normal...speakers and volume without the reciver)
if soothen the problem is in the tv's AMP which was mute all those years
hope it works
