Sony TV - Loss of half the picture

Sony FD Trinitron; KV-27FV310 (over 2 yrs old) TV was working fine, then all of a sudden....Bam! I could only see half the picture. Horizontal line half way down cutting out/off top of what actually should be seen on the screen. Bottom portion viewing is good. Top potion is black. Never had issues with TV for past two years. Connect to cable.

    Watching TV, suddenly lost top half of picture. Top of picture is black. Bottom half is normal, with a bright line separating the two.

    Same as above. Half the screen is black with a bright line in the center. Is there a Step by Step instructions on how to fix it yourself. Please advise, as with nowaday prices, one may as well purchase a new TV set for the price you'd pay to get it repaired.

Sarge, it sounds like the vertical output IC went bad on you. If it was a bad connection or a bad capacitor, your picture would have been a straght line across the screen. They call the output section of the IC a push-pull type of amp, so the top half of the sweep IC went out. If you have had some soldering experience, and or experience with solid state repair, locating the bad IC and replacing it is no big deal. If you havent, stay safe and call in a pro to assist you in this repair, as there is alot of high voltage inside this puppy that is still present even if the set is unplugged. It should not cost an arm or a leg to repair this set. An honest repair on a set like this if you take it in should not exced 125 to 150 bucks. Good Luck PS Please dont forget to rate this thread.

Follow techmans advice. A vetical timebase failure like this is not bad and should not take a Serviceman long to fix, and therfore should not cost too much, if he has the all important service sheet, or circuit diagram and an oscilloscope. Line/horizontal timebase failure is much more serious, as this is the primary source of power and would cost more.

SOURCE: 1/3rd of Bottom portion of Screen is blacked out

sound like you have cloced caption text on, this is not the same as the normal cloced caption, look on your rempte for caption or "cc". if you don't see it you will find it in your menu & turn it off. have a good day.

I have a Sony FD Trinitron 27' Model # KV-27FV310. It is approx 8 years old. After turning it on and watching a full screen for a few minutes; all of a sudden, a line came across half the screen;

top half missing is in vertical circuit of set---if it is a 27 inch and this old consider retiring it and replacing----other option is consider having a shop repair it--a rough guess would be as high as 150 dollars parts and labor is possible for your problems.

I have a Sony Trinitron 32 color tv KV 2168MTJ (quite old - 10 yrs old), and the standby light blinks exactly 200 times (just over 3 mins) before it turns on. Once it is on, it works perfectly. What's...

A poor solder connection on B+ is the line, Horizontal drive transformer or at the base of Horizontal Output transistor can caused that. Re-soldering these section can fix it..
