Printer leaving blank columns down right hand side of paper and apparently this is due to the laser unit malfunctioning.
SOURCE: PRINTER CUTS OFF RIGHT SIDE OF PAPER
First, on your computer desktop. left click on START. Next, left click on CONTROL PANEL, and left click on PRINTERS. Find your printer on the PRINTERS window, and RIGHT CLICK on the icon. From the drop-down menu, left click on PRINTING PREFERENCES. Use the settings to set up the printer for the paper size and orientation you want to use.Click APPLY , then OK buttons to apply any changes you make. If that does not help, check the side paper guides in the paper source you are using. If they are not against the paper on both sides, the paper will not align properly with the image. Move the guides snug but not tight against the paper. If the guides are too tight, paper may not feed. If moving the guides does not solve the problem, try loosening the guides and reposition the paper until the image is properly aligned. Then see in your owners manual if there is an adjustment called SIDE-TO-SIDE REGISTRATION, and follow the proceedure to adjust the side-to side paper alignment.

SOURCE: How to solve repeated paper jams in Dell 3010 laser printer
Replace the pick rollers. If you're out of warranty it'd be mighty expensive to have Dell replace them, but, if you call them, they can get you access to a website (I can't remember the name...sorry) that has walk through tear-downs with pictures of each and every step. (Only do this if you're handy and have time)
Otherwise, replacement is the next option.
Typically Jams on this unit are from worn rollers. :)
Good luck.

Call Dell. the 1700 has special reset instructions for resetting the drum count.

Usually lines going down pages is linked to the imaging drum having built up toner on it. I would open the front cover and pull out the drum and see if you have lines going down the drum. If so clean those off using the soft cloth. Reinsert. If it still happens check the toner carts for leaking. Also you may need a new imaging drum if problem still occurs.
Testimonial: "Yes, the drum cartridge buildup was exactly as you stated. Thank you so much!"
