TOSHIBA Model: TV28C30 - No Vertical. Just flat horizontal line.

A couple of days ago I turned my set on and got no picture. Instead, just a flat horizontal line centered in middle of picture tube. No problem with sound. I have no service manual for this TV. So, I am hoping someone will direct me as to which component burned out? Thank you. GerryW

Sound is good, and if you bump the outside housing of the television sometimes the picture will come back for a little while.

The vertical output IC is most likly bad or has a bad connection on it. Its a stand up IC witha metal heat sink and should start with an LA number. There ciould also be a problem with the B+ feed if you replace the IC and still get no vertical deflection. The parts would be in the sweep power supply and would start with the same first number thats printed on the printed circuit board, that is printed by the vertal sweep IC, meaning if the IC number on the board was IC412, then the B+ supply parts would start with 4 also ie r456, d456,c435 ect ect. The numbers I used are not the actuall numbers just used for referance. If you need a schematic one is available at http://www.servicemanuals.net for a download price of about 24 bucks. Remember though to always be safe and if you have no solid state repair experience, please consult a pro to assist you with this repair. Good Luck Please dont forget to rate this thread.

Gerry, A vetical timebase failure like this is not bad and should not take a Serviceman long to fix if he has the all important service sheet, or circuit diagram and an oscilloscope. It is worth looking in the back, if you can obtain some layout details, and with it switched on, use a long dowel rod to prod the part of the circuit, as it may just be a dry joint, or burnt resistor.

This is a very common problem with Toshiba CRT TV's. There are a couple of electroytic capacitors near the vertical deflection amplifier (VDA) which become leaky, then the VDA blows out. Replace the VDA and the electrolytic capacitors near it (sorry, don't have a schematic to tell you exactly which two); if you just replace the VDA without replacing the caps, the new VDA will justblow up in a matter of seconds-minutes.

My picture is doubled on my toshiba TN50V71 as if there is a shadow behind everything? Please help!

hi, sounds like a convergence issue. try this...
  • Look through your manual. Your manual will always give you the most specific directions for your particular model. Look for an "adjusting convergence" or "set manual convergence" section.

  • Enter the menu on your TV. Use the remote control and bring up the menu.
  • Choose "Convergence." This may be under "Picture Settings," "Function" or "Advanced Options."
  • Select a color. You will have red, green and blue to choose from. Do each one, starting with red.
  • Press "Enter." A crosshair pattern will appear on your screen.
  • Adjust vertically. If there is a horizontal red line visible, press the up or down arrow keys (or channel up or down) to adjust the convergence until the line is superimposed on the horizontal-center line of the white crosshair.
  • Adjust horizontally. If there is a vertical red line visible, press left or right (or volume up or down) to adjust horizontally. Do this until the line is superimposed on the vertical line of the white crosshair.
  • Save settings. It is important to save your settings when you are done, instead of simply exiting the menu.
  • Repeat these steps for all colors.
    good luck!

    Lines on tv

Set starts, horizontal and vertical deflection work, HT ok, crt heaters ok, but no sound or picture
I turned the G2 voltage up and noticed a white screen with flyback lines, frame ok. I detected two badly soldered double diode rectifiers in the secondary part of the power supply ! I checked all other joints, and everything was ok !! success
White horizontal line (no vertical deflection)
    Check / replace R548, R549
Sound but no picture except for a couple of horizontal colour lines
Replaced the frame chip TDA8356, set now ok

    No picture, only sound

The set has a shorted vertical output IC, probably a TA8427k. The capacitors around the heat sink of this IC dry out and cause the IC to run hot. The correct repair is to replace the vertical output and the electrolytic capacitors near it. Also use 105 centig instead of the original 85 centigrade. The is some time a pico fuse or current limittng resistor which must also be replaced. This a common problem with Toshiba and is not a bad picture tube. The usual cost of this repair is around $120-150 depending on the integrity of the technician. Scrivitron
