Recognising floppy disk drive type on DS10

I have loaded VMS 7.3 on DS10, I entered command
"show device/ful dva0" , vms say its a RX26, however the label on drive unit says RX23.

I cannot initialise or mount the drive.

Is the mismatch in the device types an issue and how do I get the initialise the drive.
Thanks.

Is your DS10 up to date with the most recent VMS patches from HP? To find out, enter the command "PRODUCT SHOW HISTORY VMS73*" and take a look at HP's patch database (especially the master list for VMS V7.3) Reply to me here if you need assistance with this.

At a minimum you should have installed VMS73_UPDATE-V0300.

What error message, if any, do you get when you try to initialize or mount a floppy in the drive? Does the drive actuate when you do this? (If so you should see the light on the drive flash and/or hear the drive working.)

Have you checked the DS10's SRM firmware version? At the >>> prompt enter SHOW CONSOLE_VERSION. The latest is V7.3.

I wouldn't expect the firmware on a DS10 to be too old to support a floppy drive (which would have been optional when ordering a new DS10) but you never know. You can download the latest version at HP's Alpha firmware page.

At the >>> prompt you might also want to enter "SHOW CONFIG" and see if you can find a line in the output that might identify the floppy drive. My DS10 doesn't have a floppy so I can't tell you exactly what you should see, but it might include text like RV or RZ. Let me know here what you see.

I believe a 23 is a 1.44 drive and a 26 is a 2.8(which also reads 1.4) so if you are putting a 2.8 floppy into the rx23 it wont like it but if its a 1.4 in a 26 it should be ok.

The Only VMS post on fixya ever.
wow. from the dark ages of DEC. VMS. OS.
sounds like bad drive if it can not be mounted.(or disk bad)
sounds like you are 42 years behind the upgrade curve too...
i used to work on all DEC systems. so know that . 1975
the DS10, is now 18 years old.

here is a relic manual, on that

http://zzz.physics.umn.edu/_media/computing/department/ds10-cr.pdf

is this your only DS10, of not try the drive on system #2?
ahh its now called OPENVMS,, amazing thing that is.

open vms was ported to ALph chips. 1992
then 2001 port of OpenVMS to the Intel Itanium architecture
so it's an 17 year old OS.

get HP proliant Server G7 up. and win. for sure.

Version 7.1-2 is an older version of the OS. I will have to check, but I think that V7.2 will resolve this. What version of TCP/IP are you using? Back in the day when I supported TCP and VMS, there were some timing issues that causes odd behavior. If you can provide the details about your configuration, I can check and get back to you. If necessary, an examination of a forced crashdump may be needed.

A rare opportunity to work with VMS again!!

Good stuff.

The serial port parameters are set from the front panel.

Hit the "Setup" button, then hit the "Next" button (many times) until you reach the Serial Port parameters. You'll be prompted for a password before you get there. The default is "1234", entered with the "Plus and Minus" buttons.

Use the "Plus" and "Minus" button to make changes.

When finished, use the "Exit" button. Select "Permanent" changes and hit the "Save" button.

We need to set up a voice mail for an extension that has not been used in years. When I press intercom 777 and enter extension it tells me to enter password which no one in the office knows anymore. When...

The default password on partner voicemails is 1234. The reason for the call returning to the extension that transferred the call to the new extension is probably because the cover vms isn't set up for the new extension.
To check the vms cover for that extension, at either extension 10 or 11 press feature 00 and press the left hand intercom button twice. The display will say system programming.
Enter #310, the display will sayAutomatic VMS Cover Extension:
enter in the extension number of the new extension.
The screen will say either "1 assigned" or "2 not assigned"
enter in 1 (assigned)
press feature 00 when finished.

The phone rings 3 times and goes to voicemail on the 4th ring. How do I change it to pick up on the 8th ring?

I don't think its a good idea to back the vms cover rings to 8. The furthest I'd go is maybe 6.
Changing the VMS cover rings on a Partner system is done on either ext 10 or 11.
At one of those ext's press the feature key and "00"
next press the left hand intercom twice
the display should say system programming
enter in "#321"
the display should say VMS Cover Rings and ask for an extension number
enter the extension number you wish to change
The current ring data should be displayed
enter in new data (8 ring if you wish)
press feature "00" to logout
