The operating system is stored on the hard drive. If the BIOS can't find the O/S then the hard drive is damaged or the windows installation is corrupted. Boot to the BIOS screen and see if you can see the hardrive listed on the information tab. If you can see the drive, you either have bad sectors on the hard drive or a corrupted boot file. You can insert your windows disc and start the machine. Click install now, choose language and on the next screen click 'repair computer'. Choose 'startup repair' this will rewrite the windows boot files.

A few things can fix this, all depends on what exactly is wrong, it could be the hard drive, you can access the bios and go to diagnostics and run the hard disk scan, if either fail call hp and see if they will replace it, if your out of warranty its failry simple and not to expensive to do yourself. you can also attept a recovery if you have the disks...one of these two will work its a 50/50 hope it helps!

The laptop can't find a hard disk, eirher the hard drive is faulty or not seated properly.
Take out the hard drive and reseat it again then see if the laptop boots up. If it still can't find the hard drive, listen to the hard drive, is it spinning up, is it making clicking noises? This indicates a faulty drive and needs to be replaced.
You can also test the hard drive by removing the hard drive and attaching it to a USB hard drive adapter and then plug it into a working computer's USB port. If the hard drive is OK then the computer will see it as an external drive and you can view and open the files.

After that it gets complicated and you probably will need the assistance of a local computer store.
