Ok, I have a dell dimension 4600 pc and i've redone the whole thing before. And when I did redo it, i called and asked what button to press when the pc is starting up. I remeber it being one of the F's (F1, F2, etc.) but ive tried all of them and none seem to be working. If anyone could post and help me that would be great.
F8. If that isn't it I would go up to F11. The important thing to remember is you may have to repeatedly tap it starting as soon as you see the Dell logo on your screen. Let me know if this helps. I may need more info on what exactly you are wanting to accomplish. I am writing this as to help you with getting to the area of your computer that deals with how it boots up. Meaning that you will need to change it from hard disk to cd rom. If this is not what you are looking for let me know [email protected] and I am sure I can be of further assistance to you.

Try: Ctrl + F11 when the machine first boots up. This takes my Dimesion 4600 to a restore screen.

On Dell's I've worked with F2 will get you into the bios setup where you can select the boot devices and order they are tried. F12 will give a boot menu and allow you to pick the boot device. However if you do not have the device selected in the bios it will not show on the boot menu. First try F12 if it shows your cd as the boot device your set. If not use F2 to get to the bios setup and set your cd as a boot device (usually a check mark done by using the spacebar).

If you are in the bios and have set the boot menu to the CD ROM being the first boot device, when you save the settings it should boot up using the Windows CD and give you the option to press 'R' for repair or 'press Enter' to install Windows. with all these posts, I think it's all covered now.

You can reset the computer to the factory defaults by re-installing windows from the disc provided by your manufacturer. Put the Windows CD in the CD drive and reboot the computer. When the computer starts up, hit F12. Then choose to boot the CD-ROM. The Windows Install process will then begin. Follow the the prompts through out the install. When given the choice, choose to erase the current install, erase and reformat the drive, and re-install on a fresh NTFS quick formatted partition. NOTE: Make sure you back up all your data before performing this action, as resetting the computer deletes all files and programs.

SOURCE: My Dimension 4600 won't boot
strike F2 for setup utility and then find there "use default configuration or default optimized configuration" (something like that" then press F10 to save and exit.
Don't work?
Replace the CMO battery and then do the above statement.
