I actually have a Zanussi WDS1183W but it looks pretty similar to this one!
Problem: On a darks cycle the machine completes quicker than it should and the clothes come out smelling nice and fresh but have not been cleaned properly.
On hot cycles (whites) the machine just gets stuck after the filling with water, if you then turn the knob to the colours position it will complete the cycle but again not remove any stains.
I have previously replaced the pump on this machine and it has worked fine for 6 months. The dryer part of the machine works fine, it spins ok and dissoles the tablets.
Has anyone heard of a prolem like this? I am fairly handy at DIY so hope to be able to do a home fix job... could you please help me :)

Don't pause the cycle mid cycle. The machine uses the amount of water it needs to clean the amount of clothes that are in the tub. If you pause it after the first 7 or 8 minutes, you're already past the sensing part of the cycle and likely you won't get more water for the additional clothes.
Also, the clothes don't need to be soaking wet or wet enough to wring out. These new HE machines mix the detergent with water and then spray that detergent solution onto your clothes. Then the clothes against clothes rubbing with that solution already coating the clothes is how the machines clean better! It is a very similar process to when you pretreat your clothes with Shout of Spray and Wash. You spray the clothes and then rub the short against itself. Now the Whirlpool machines are doing this for you!
I think I have the same type of washing machine as you do. Wash is when all the clothes get agitated or mixed with soap and water (ever look in there when its washing? the water can get pretty gross looking!) So in my washer, the rinse cycle is when all that gross water is drained, and the washer spins while spraying clean water over the clothes to get rid of the dirty water and soap. I think mine does this 5 or 6 times in the cycle. Next is the spin cycle, which is when the washer spins REALLY fast to **** as much water out of the clothes as possible, so that the clothes aren't sopping wet when you put them in the dryer.
It sounds like your mom has a newer washing machine, probably a front load one, and they do seem to keep using clean water, instead of just agitating the clothes in dirty water.
hi this is joyce
They sell a product called affresh it cost about $10.00 you put in the machine and run a cycle and this should take care of the smell. if this does not do it then run pure bleach in despenser and run cycle no clothes in washer. this will kill the mold. also never close the door completly on the machine because this holds moisture inside the machine, so leave a crack in door so the machine will dry out some. this should take care of the problem.
