I don't have an old modem........what should I do to configure my new belkin F9J1001v1 router+modem
The Belkin router issues IP addresses to all your computer on your network.
You need to connect the Belkin to the the DSL or cable modem to allow your computers on your network to get Internet access.
If Internet access is not required then don't connect the modem.

It sound like youe wireless card in the laptop is not configured correctly.
The TCP/IP settings on the laptop's wireless card should be as follows :-
In the wireless card's Properties - TCP/IP
Enablw - Obtain an IP Address automatically
Enable - Obtain DNS server address automatically
This is the same for the LAN card.
