For the past few days when you turn on the tv there would be a very loud humming noise, then it would fade away and the sound would come on. Then yesterday the humming noise started coming back after the set was on for a while, and stayed steady on every channel. Now today, the sound slowly faded away, I mean ALL the sound, even the humming. Now the tv is completely silent. The picture is fine tho. Any suggestions?

Re: akai hdtv 1080i, No Sound
I sounds like a bad filter in the sudio supply circuit finally took out the sound output chip or the power supply that controls the sound circuit. its a soliud state set and there are no user replaceable parts inside this set. Unless you have had solid state repair experience, please be safe and call in a pro to assost you in this repair. good Luck

It is likely to be a filter capacitor in the audio section of this TV. Please check all capacitors in the audio section first before replacing an IC chip they are more prone to fail and cheaper to replace. If it is the audio chip the cost could be around $30. and up just for the chip add another $125. for troubleshooting and chip replacement. I would estimate it to be $170.00 with tax.
Yes this is correct if you have no solid state component replacement experience.
i took off the back and pulled out the the fan. Then put in a fat screw between a slight gap whick kept the fan from hitting what ever is causing the noise. probably not safe but nothing bad happened yet.
Your color wheel needs to be changed. Mine just did the same thing. I changed mine, and the buzzing sound went away, however now my picture washes out with light or yellow colors. The darks look green and purple also.
the old color wheel on models pre 06 have bearings. The new replacement dosn't. The noise you here is the bad bearing. Mine got so loud I couldn't take it anymore. Just replace and noise is gone! I did mine myself. Not that hard.
Samsung is notorious for having the motor on the color wheel burn out. If the color on the tv starts to fade or shift tones when the rev'ing or noise is happening then you'll know its the color wheel. There are only two moving parts in this set, the color wheel and the fans. If you're smelling something, it could be either. Take the back off the set and put a piece of tape on the lamp door switch and turn the set on. Try to pinpoint the source of the noise. If its a fan, no big deal, Radio shack should have a replacement. If it sounds like its comming from under the set, dig a little deeper and try unhooking the color wheel motor, not as easy as I am making it sound but either way the fan is about $20 to fix and the color wheel is about $100. Sure beats a $400 tech bill. If you get stuck, comment back and I'll send pictures of the dismantle.
Our AKAI was just 14 months old. A few days ago, it died also. Blank screen, no sound, but the timer light will flash on a couple of times when you try to power it up. It even sounds like it wants to turn on. I paid a tech to come to my house $65 and it turns out to be the power supply $385. I checked other chat boards and many people are having this same problem with their AKAI 42" (PT4298HD) televsion. A real piece of junk this model! Sorry for the bad news!
