Thank you :) how pricey would this be to fix? Or are we better off buying a new TV? Our warranty and MRA expired about a year ago.Thank you :) how pricey would this be to fix? Or are we better off buying a new TV? Our warranty and MRA expired about a year ago.
Turned on 27"Sayno and a 3/8" vertical line is all that appeared . Sound was fine. Tapped the side of the set and the picture came on full screen for several minutes then reverted back to just the thin line and has remained that way.Turned on 27"Sayno and a 3/8" vertical line is all that appeared . Replace the yoke return cap. Its a polyester cap. probably 0.33uf and blue. trace back from the yoke connector plug pins. Other than that, look for bad solder on the yoke plug.
A vetical timebase failure like this is not bad and should not take a Serviceman long to fix if he has the all important service sheet, or circuit diagram and an oscilloscope.
Line/horizontal timebase failure is much more serious, as this is the primary source of power and would cost more.
The set is having a problem in the vertical deflection circuitry, the one in charge of opening the picture up and down.Sometimes the output IC developes loose conections and sometimes the IC just goes bad,if you tap the set on the side lightly and it reacts it might only be a loose conection.
If you are familiar with tv service you have a place to start but if you are not too familiar be safe and call for assistance from a servicer,it should not be expensive if you take it to the shop.
If the quality of the picture was good when it failed it is worth the repair. If the quality of the picture was good when it failed it is worth the repair.

This problem sounds like the vertical output circuit is bad. it could be a vertical output IC, a bad resistor in the sweep supply, a bad capacitor, or a bad solder connections. Sorry to say this is a solid state set, so if you know how to solder and know how to service solid state devices, you should have No problem finfing the bad part. if you have no experience, please be safe and call in a trainede tech to assist you. Good Luck

The problem is in the circuit board, there are bad solder connections near the high voltage transformer and the vertical deflector ic. If you are handy with a soldering iron unplug set, remove the back cover, "several screws" and check the underside of the board on the right side, when in dought touch up with soldering iron.
The thin line image appears when the vertical deflection unit is not operational. This is a major fault for which you will have to take the tv to a repair shop - several components (starting with the vertical amplifier) will have to be replaced. In the mean time do not use the tv, or it may fail completely.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that sounds like your TV is broken. There's very little chance that you'll be able to fix it yourself, as modern televisions are incredibly complicated and dangerous to work in without training. I'd suggest sending it in for service if it's still under warranty. If not, you could look in to a local TV repair place.
Good luck!
There are bad solder connections on the vertical IC. This is a small flat IC attached to a heat sink. It should have about 9-11 pins and may be marked LA7837 or something similar. Resolder the pins on this IC and that should resolve the problem.

The problem you are having is a vertical deflection problem. The screen is being compressed to a thin white line. It's probably a defective vertical output module or transistor. This part is not too expensive. Less likely would be a vertical deflection coil, which would be more expensive because its usually glued to the picture tube and harder to replace. You'll need to take your set to service center to have it serviced.
This problem sounds like a short inside the picture tube itself unless a driver transistor failed that drives the red gun in the CRT. You may have to take it to an authorized repair facility if the picture tube is still in warranty.
