Access your modem using the default gateway. Most of the time it is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1. Type it in your browser then your modem's firmware would show up. Click on wireless. You have a box on "Enable wireless" Just uncheck it and click save settings then it should all be ready to go. Or better yet, try to disable broadcasting your SSiD so that only you can access the wireless because no one else can see it.

There is only one quick way to turn off your wireless internet access.

Turn off the modem or router if you are using it.

For your information, all home networks have their own access key, without which nobody can access it... it is normally printed at the bottom of the modem. 10 digit encryption key.

Cable and wireless question

Not possible, since the "input" to the 2WIRE modem is a 4-wire telephone-line, not an 8-wire Ethernet cable.

Instead, spend about $40 to buy a D-Link Wireless G modem, and connect its WAN port to the cable-modem, and connect up to 4 Ethernet cables to "wired" computers, and configure the "wireless" component of the D-Link router.

Belkin router is unable to connect to 2Wire ADSL modem/router. 2Wire router has DHCP server enabled and Belkin has DHCP server disabled. Belkin is set to obtain an IP automagically. 2Wire IP is...

If the Internet light is off then there is a problem with the phone line to the ADSL modem or the modem is faulty or there is a problem at the telephome exchange.
Disconnect the phone cable at the ADSL modem and connect a phone handset to this cable - check for a dial tone and that you can dial out.
If you don't get a dial tone, use a different or new phone cable.
If the phone line is OK then : -
Ring your ISP to get them to test your connection to your ADSL
modem.

I can't hook my computer up to my phone line for internet. I have my router and another desktop hooked up to the phone line through the router.

That modem is in itself a router. However it only has one Ethernet port and no means of broadcasting a wireless Internet Signal which makes its function of a Router somewhat useless. What you need a(n) (wireless) access point. The Access Point will give you more Ethernet slots allowing more computers to be connected to the modem/router via CAT5 (Ethernet) cables. Depending on if you get a Wireless access point or not you might also be capable of using a wireless adapter to connect to the 2wire and get Internet access.

Let me know if I need to clarify any of the points above or if I can assist you further.

CAN A 2WIRE DSL ROUTER WORK WITH A CABLE INTERNET CONEECTION

The 2wire dsl modem/router cannot be use with a another cable modem , since this 2wire device is also a modem/router and its made for the DSL conenction that's why it wont work with Cox cable, the best thing that you can do is to ask Cox to give a wireless modem/router like this 2wire so you can still use the wireless connection of your computer..

Hope that helps..........

Linksys Adapter and 2wire router

  1. ensure that a wireless connection is created in control panel on the pc, it may not even be attempting to connect
  2. ensure that the router wireless is turned ON, it may have been turned off as a security measure when no wireless pcs were used
  3. The security settings on the adaptor may be set to the office network and locked
wep password at home is different or not enabled, so the secured adaptor will not connect.
make any changes from a cable connected pc (no chance of data loss)
access the routers settings page and check the settings,
then ensure the adaptor rom if present is set to the same settings

Connecting 2wire router with desktop pc and laptop

hi! try to check the settings on your 2wire modem, you can do this by going to gateway.2wire.net, run the system setup wizard, when you get to the ppp authentication page, check the username & password on it, it should be the one that you setup for your ISP account. as for the wireless on the desktop, it depends on the brand of the wireless adapter, be sure you have installed the drivers for this adapter. you may need to go to the client utility manager or the wireless adapter shortcut/icon on your computer screen then configure it to "see" the 2wire network. make sure wireless encryption is turned on in the 2wire modem's MDC, you can do this by going to homeportal/management, or go to gateway.2wire.net/mdc.

Lost Ethernet and Wireless Connections in Modem

I've not used one of these 2wire boxes before, but I believe the default router's address is 192.168.0.1. Try this instead of gateway.2wire.net to see if you can gain access to the router. This is just the starting point, but see if it works.

Here's a link to, what I believe is, the router's manual.

Before you rate this please let me try to help some more. This could be a multi step process...

Wireless router

What is the make and model of your router?

What type of internet access do you have (DSL or cable)?

Are you connecting the computer with a cable or via wireless?

If you have verified that the cable connections are correct then I would try to power cycle next.

1. Unplug the modem, router and turn off the computer.
2. Plug the modem in and wait 5 minutes.
3. Plug the router back in.
4. Turn the computer back on.

Let me know the details for the above questions if we need to go further.
