SOURCE: fan not blowing

Even when the power is off at the unit outside the thermostat will supply power to the contactor of the outside unit. This may give a hum or buzz as you stated. If when the power is on to the outside unit the fan tries to start but only hums the motor may be bad. Does the compressor start and run?

SOURCE: AC fan not blowing/ Honeywell T87F thermastat

if you have a voltmeter that checks capacitance, check the capacitor ( silver looking battery) that is mounted on the side of the blower housing in the furnace. You need to take the wires off!! A bad Cap will slow down the fan and if its blown/dead the fan will not run.

If youre more than 1 MFD off the rating stamped on the capacitor, Replace it.

Hello, I replaced a light fixture on my existing Emerson ceiling fan. The light worked right away but the blades didn't turn. I could hear power going to the motor so I went back into the switch cup and...

Signs of a bad capacitor in a ceiling fan include:

  • Fan runs slowly or not at all on all speeds
  • Fan will not start but will spin if started by hand
  • Certain speeds are slow or do not work
  • The motor hums and turns freely by hand but will not spin

The capacitor is usually a black box inside the switch housing of the fan. If this box appears burnt or melted in any way, that is also the sign of a bad capacitor and it should be replaced.

Motor outside is humming like it on but the fan isn't turning

Sounds like the run capacitor is bad or the bearings or siezing up. Turn the power off to the unit, then spin the fan blade to see if it spins freely, if it does then it's probably the capacitor.

    Fan

Ifs its a small humming sound, then its the contactor pulling in. But if it a loud humming sound then its the compressor kicking in. and the fans not, try to take something long and turn the blades on the fan, if it takes off and run then your capacitor is shot or swollen at the top, which was cause by power surge. Take-off and replace with the same mfd. writings ,on the outside of can. Also check for blown fuses or tripped breaker . the fuses should be in the disconnect box on the wall, or the breaker in the breaker box.. Older house has fuses instead of a breaker box!
