I don't think many people have a trouble free web cam, whatever make or model of pc or web cam. I get echo and feed back; if that's wot you mean by static, or do you litterly mean static. Helps to have your volume down a touch and the person who you are speaking to also, especially if it has a built in microphone(sorry, not checked your model), a seperate microphone is best as it's away from any possible speaker feedback from your pc's speakers, or any other clse electrical interference. Hope this relieves it a little.

If this is definately a compatability problem, you should take the cam back and exchange for a compatible one before you have had it too long to exchange. Ask the shop advice and if there is still a problem then atleast it's the shops fault in advising you wrongly.

SOURCE: no sound on my computer with quick cam communocate STX
i had the same problem just go to control panel and click on sound. after that you will see your speaker system and then a digital sound system (which is for the camera) pick your system. This took me hours to figure out but I set it so the camera uses my speakers.

SOURCE: logitech quick cam communicate stx on Vista - microphone not working
Why isn't the microphone on my camera working?
Answer
The
microphone may not work because of a hardware or configuration
problem. To determine if it's a hardware problem, test the microphone
in Sound Recorder.
The microphone may also be defective. To test this, try the camera on another USB enabled system.
If you can record sound in Sound Recorder, but not in the QuickCam
application, try setting the Logitech Microphone as the Preferred
device in Audio Properties.
