These are the most common methods for recovering Sandisk's Sansa Mp3 Players. I have been almost universally successful in recovering Sansa players using one or a combination of these methods. These methods do not work if you are having synchronization or music format issues - they are for recovering a player that will not power up, freezes, flashes, is not recognized by the computer, and a host of other issues.

Reset the Sansa Player first. On most models, restart is done by holding the power button in for 15 seconds or longer. Check your specific manual to be sure. The manuals are available from the Sansa website if they have been misplaced.
Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website.
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/DriverDownload/driverList.asp
If these fail, then:
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
If you get the problem where MTP Device keeps popping up continuously, uninstall the “MTP Device” by going to Start à Control Panel àSystem à Hardware à Device Manager (you computer may vary slightly, depending on Windows Version).
You may have to restart your computer after each of these methods to get them to work properly. Disconnect your Sansa player BEFORE shutting down your computer.

I cannot access the music on my Samsa M230 via USB to PC. I would like to copy the music off the sansa and add new music, but windows media player doest show any music files on the m230 drive

Hello,

There are 2 modes the player can connect to a computer:
1. MSC mode: the operating system, seeing the player as a removable disk on "My Computer"
2. MTP mode: added software, when an extra program is started the player is detected in this application software: e.g. Windows Media Player

When songs show up on the player but not on My Computer:
1. The player is in MSC mode and music has been put on the player with a program in MTP mode
or
2. The player is in MTP mode and music has been put on the player
using Windows Explorer in My Computer in MSC mode

In your case the solution should be:
Switch the player into MSC mode and look in Windows Explorer for
a driver letter with a capacity of about 512MB memory.

How to get the player in MSC mode:
Using the menu on the player:
From the main menu go to Settings Menu > USB and select MSC mode.
Using the hold switch on the player:
1. Turn device OFF.
2. Facing the hold switch slide it to the right so an orange color would show putting the device on Hold.
3. Connect the device to the PC.

Explore "My Computer", looking for the players content showing up as a drive letter (about 512 MB sized for the m230)
Click the drive letter, select your files and "copy + save" or "drag and drop" them to a location on the computer.

Sansa m230

When connected to your computer, go to your My Computer folder, and right click on your Mp3 player. You should see "Format Device". This wipes the entire thing. All music will be gone, but it might reset it.

Everything is wiped out and so is the radio! Please help !!

The Music DB refers to the information (i.e. - Artist, Album, etc.).

The device need you to free up 6MB so it can create this.

Connect the device to the PC and delete several songs until you have at least 6MB free.

Disconnect it, restart, and youre all set.

Sansa says full but there is no files located....

You should format the device thru My Computer, rather than Windows Media Player.

FORMAT: My Computer>Device Name (m230)>Right Click and select format.

This will erase everything on the device and you can start anew.

Sandisk sansa m230 512mb

Open the device under My Computer. Your music is in the Music folder. Select the songs to copy, right click on one and select COPY. Select the destination folder on your computer and right click an select PASTE. This should copy all of your music to your PC. If you are receiving an error about "administrator rights" you need to change the Windows User account to the Administrators account. Please add to the question, if you need more assistance. Best of Luck.

My device has got locked

You cannot see the music under Windows Media Player? If you transferred the music on another computer and the music does not "reside" on the PC you are connecting to, you will not be able to see them. You can go to My Computer and double-click on the Device Name (Sansa m230) to open up the contents to "manually" manage the music. Best of Luck.
