Why wont my laptop log off even if I shut it down manualy

You will need to remove all power. This includes the battery. Then when you start up your system will report it shut down incorrectly. Select to start normally and as soon as the system has settled down properly shut it down again.
This fault is caused by a memory error when unloading on of the systems drivers. The above process will reset the driver(s) so that they load correctly next time you switch on...BUT YOU MUST REMOVE ALL POWER FIRST for it to shut down as it is stuck in that unloading loop.

My laptop won't shut down - it goes to the shutdown screen with the "logging off" on it but that's as far as it gets. I have to hold down the power button, but this is happening now every time I try to...

you have some process that gets stuck. try the follow:
  1. start your computer and press F8 to load Windows in safe mode.
  • now shut it down and see if it worked.
  • if it didn't work, try to load windows on safe mode with no network and see if it shuts down
2. did you install anything lately? if so, try to remove it and see if it fixed the problem. 3. before you shut down, press CTR+SHIFT+ESC and check the processes running. look for the processes that are consuming a lot of memory or CPU and check on google if those should be running or not.

My laptop won't shut down properly!

Is it possible that you have changed the settings of what buttons do what on your system? E.g. you could have changed the power button to "switch user" instead of "shut down", to check this (in XP) go to "Power Options" (in Control Panel" and then click on the "Advanced tab" at the top, then select "Shut down" from the drop down menu at the bottom of the window.

If this is already set to shut down then maybe you could do a system restore in case another setting has been changed, restore it to before the PC started doing this.

Alternatively try actually choosing "Turn off Computer" from the Log On screen (press Ctrl + L to get to this screen, or choose switch user/log off). If you are using Vista I beleive that there is a shut-down option from the Log In Page there (which again you can access by pressing Ctrl + L on the keyboard.

Hope this helps!
