Hi, when I try to turn the television on the picture does not come on the whole screen, usually off to one side and all wiggly and then it is like it is trying to get the picture properly and then the tv will just shut itself off. Then when you try to turn it on again it will either do the same thing with sometimes a little bit more of the picture coming properly and flattening out to look normal and then sometimes just the picture will go black with the power light will stay on. You have to do this sometimes up to 7 or eight times for the tv to have a proper picture and for it to stay on so that you can watch it. What could be wrong with my television and is this a costly repair or would I be better off to buy a new television?
Replace c 2455 a 47mf at 25v resolder 7404 if melted it might be shorted too.
As this fault is so predominant and appears to work eventually it would be worth contacting a service engineer as jomaru suggests. It is worhwhile disconnecting from mains etc. and removing the back to give it a good clean out with a long handled artists brush. You may find a slight burn indicating arcing or a burnt component. Check for bad soldering. The long wooden handle of the brush should prevent you from getting a shock, as there may still be a charge on some capacitors.
I believe you have a loose conection in the horizontal deflection circuit,a good place to start checking is the horizonatl driver transformer ,horizonatl output transistor and output transformer, one thing to try is taping on side of the set to see if it reacts and does something different,If you are familiar with tv service this information will give you a place to start but if you are not too familar see the assistance of a servicer,it should not be expensive.

I have a Philips and the same thing is happening. I'm up to 4 times on/off before whole picture. It started about a month ago and has progressed. I'm wondering if it's cheaper to buy a new set instead of having it serviced.
