Split screen from DVD player, cable is fine no problem

I had an old DVD player on my Sony but it would not play certain formats and stopped working. So I replaced is with a newer DVD player with progressive scan - Samsung. The picture is split and compressed at an angle. When input is from the cable the picture is good. Any ideas?

Try putting in new cable cords. It seems like your cords are old or they are not working good with that particular tv.

It is not clear where you say input is from cable, do you mean the Scart input to your Sony TV? Do not use Progressive scan(p), as this is not interlaced. The normal TV requires an interlaced(i) picture of 50 half frames per second giving 25 complete pictures per second to reduce flicker. Some TVs and projectors and all monitors accept Progressive scan.
