When connecting the dictaphone to my PC the display screen does not turn on, despite moving the on/off switches etc.
My computer also does not recognise that the dictaphone has been connected. It seems that the dictaphone is nonresponsive &"dead" for all intents and purposes.
Has anybody come across this problem?

Re: dictaphone does not turn on
There is a small hole in the back of the unit. This activates the firmware update. My experiense is someone pushed this in with a pin and caused the switch to be stuck. You can disassemble the unit and use a pin to pry the bubble switch up or off. This switch is only needed to update the firmware which can also be done thre software so is not needed.

Hello this is when you used the On/Off button to connect to the PC, normally when your m5220 is on the off position than you plug the unit to the docking station or USB cable, press the ON/OFF button to see on the display PC operation, the unit will be connected to your PC, to download your audio files when you are using walkabout Transfer software program on your PC.
I've never encountered that problem, but the manual says: Make sure remote Transcribe indicator is extinguished. Move the Transcribe switch to Local position. Locate letter to erase with either [Prev. Ltr] or [Next Ltr]. Simultaneously press [Currnet Ltr] and [Erase] buttons to erase letter appearing in Item Status display. A tone plays and Erase LED lights briefly. Letter is automatically deleted.
To erase all Transcribed Letters: Make sure "In Use" Transcribe indicator is extinguished. Move Transcribe switch to Local position. Simultaneously press the [Finished Ltrs] and [Erase] buttons. Tone plays and Erase LED lights briefly. Good luck!
Do you know how to determine the total minutes on the machine? I have 2 that I want to sell, one of which is on eBay. Thanks.
I'd try cleaning the internal switches on the main PCB. You'll have to remove the back cover on the portable (3 screws) and the remove the four screws on the PCB and CAREFULLY flip the PCB over to reveal the switches.
I assume the portable plays fine, but just won't rewind?
Try another cassette. There is a tab on each side of the back edge of a tape which when removed will prevent most machines from going into record. If the tab is there (and not bent in), then the switch at the back of the cassette compartment is dirty or out of adjustment. If you can find a manual for the 2740 (try at www.nuance.com, they bought Dictaphone), it will show how to change the Letter display back to a timeline. Good Luck.
More than likely then the drive belt is broken or the motor is bad.
If you press the reset button the 88.8 flashing should go to 00.0.
If you are sure the tape is good, there is also a switch at the rear of the cassette compartment to detect if the record prevention tab is missing from the cassette itself. If the tab is in the cassette, the switch could be dirty or out of adjustment.
