Symphonic WRF205 DVD recorder with vcr. Recorder does not record. Dvd plays fine, but does not record. Service claims optical read head error. How is this posible if it plays all dvd's fine just does not record? Blank dvd's load correctly with no error and show available recording time. When record is initialized, 'error E4 54037380 can not record on this disk' displays. This unit records in dvd-r or dvd-rw format. I'm using same stack of disks I purchased when new. I have used succesively more expensive cleaning dvd's clean it. Surely there is some other solution?
Yes, I agree. Dust on the lense will create this error as it did on mine. However, to save you a lot of tech fees or difficulty in dismantling the machine, just buy a can of AIR or Duster, etc. Open the DVD slide and "unplug" the unit from the wall. This will leave the door open. Lightly push the carrier back about halfway. Use a flashlight to look into the DVD and find the center area. Place the plastic tube on the air can in this area and blow it clean. Don't scrape or touch any of the mechanisms inside for safety. Plug it in and it should work if it is dust. This of course does mean that it will likely do it again and could use a 'good' cleaning as suggested above. But it is an easy quick fix. And if you are like me, I won't use it again for another six months.

It took about 45 minutes, without a manual. Carefully disconnecting all cables and marking them so the would go back in the right place later. Carefully Disassembling the unit, removing the cover - 6 screws, noting all screws and where they came from, pulling the front panel using the plastic tabs, removing the top front edge cover - two screws, removing the disk assembly - 4 screws, pulling the two thin leads so I could pull the entire assembly out. Removing the back plastic cover from the DVD assembly and identifying the Optical Disc Lense. Spraying some LENSE CLEANER on the same cloth that I clean my glasses with, and carefully wiping across - gentle stroke in same direction, then opposite direction - a few times. Spray lense cleaner on the cloth not on the lense. Reassemble. Reverse order of above. Works great now. BEST OF LUCK....Or you can find almost any DVD repair facility. This is not a unique process. Same issue with mine, and same error. Again, everything works except record. Even adding titles will get to 99% done before the error.
