Question about Samsung MW1030WA Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Stopped working, Display reads all 8's

My 2yr old microwave was working then just quit. Tried unplugging AC pwr cord and re-plugging and now the display reads all 8's and the only button that will work on the control pad is Handy Helper which goes from On to Off. Other thing is when you try to open the door the oven acts like it is turned on. The light lights inside the box and the fans start turning if you continue to hold the "open door" button in. I have technical background, does it sound like control pad problem? Thanks in advance

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried reseating cable and the only buttons that are active are the Sound and Handy Helper so when I push the 0 button nothing happens.

Thanks again for the suggestions, still cannot get any buttons to work except Handy Helper and Sound. I should also point out that when I said the display read all 8's that includes the words above and below the numbers are displayed.
Does that still sound like a shorted control panel?

It sounds like a shorted keypad. This can be due to age/wear or due to moisture. If the unit is sevewral years old or has ben used a lot, then age and wear can be suspected. Moisture is most often due to spraying cleaner directly on the keypad, which allows it to leak into the works. Always spray your cleaner on a soft cloth and then wipe the keypad clean. Moisture can also get in if the microwave is mounted above a stove and a lot of boiling is done without adequate ventilation, usually via the exhaust or hood fan. This fan should be on when cooking on the range top. In some cases, there may be some deposits on the keypad strip where it goes into the connector on the control circuit board. Sometimes that can be cleaned by unplugging then replugging the strip. Could it be that you're not setting the manual according to the instructions in the owner's manual? The manual is olnine at[GB].pdf I have attached a scren shot from the manual which shows the clock setting procedure. Maybe it's as simple as this.

The picture I posted did not present full-sized, so it's useless. Also, the owner's manual URL was cut off.

    Here's the photo:

And find the owner's manual here:

I checked the owner's manual and it said to hold down the "0" pad and press the "2" pad to lock or unokck the unit.

    Maybe that works?

That is an odd series of events. Microwave ovens don't have a reset button but they do have a slow blow fuse. It is no point replacing it because you have a more serious short circuit that tripped the breaker immediately. You can't work on Microwave ovens yourself as they are so dangerous inside. Also the case is fixed with special security screws. Panasonic are pretty much the best in the business and I have used many in a commercial kitchens environment. The old ones are much better made than any new one these days, so it is well worth getting it repaired. Pull it out and take in.

One day the microwave just showed PF on the screen, unplugged and plugged in tried to use it, worked for 30 seconds, stopped and showed PF again. Any ideas? It is only a few years old and used in our...

PF is Power Failure. Check and see if the Oven has a reset switch or power button. Try and hook up an extension cord, plug one end into a usable output (wall plate) and the other into the 110VA line plug attached to the Oven. Turn on....if it works then the problem is a circuit breaker or wall interface. If it fails with the extension, then it is an electrical problem with the microwave device itself. If there are no Reset features on the oven, an internal fuse may blow, or other shorts are occurring. The cost to fix is more than a new unit. Lowes has them as low as $150.00.

Hotpoint microwave only works a few seconds then shows all 8s in the display

Sounds like its time for a new microwave

You can probably buy a new one cheaper then fixing the old one

Most controls that display 888 something is shorted out on the controller.

Have you tried unplugging it for 5 minutes and plugging back in?

No lights - Acts Like It Has No Power At All

see the diagram and pictorial and proceed with common sense:
1) test the fuse for open or band contact with VOM,see the diagram attached how to do it
2)check the switch door hook or door release button, when they are broken they do not touch the switch, and will NOT start. test for open
see the diagram

Same thing happened to us. We just came back from Sears, where we bought another. Just for giggles, my wife suggested unplugging the old one and plugging it back in again. It works now. New one's going back to the store.
