Question about Kenwood KDC-X717 CD Player

1 Answer

Kenwood KDC-X717 - Facplate opens when powered on, stays open. No display.

I have the Kenwood KDC-X717, and when the vehicle is powered on, the faceplate opens and stays there. There is no display at all. When I pull off the faceplate, the unit closes back up, until I put the faceplate back in, and then it opens up again and stays there. I have verified that all voltages are getting to the unit itself (12v constant, and 12v keyed). I am at a loss for what is going on. What is most likely; Bad ribbon cable, bad faceplate, or is the whole unit just shot?

This unit appears to have been opened - the "do not remove this sticker" has been peeled off. Could have been scraped I guess. Would an authorized repair center fix it even though it's out of warranty?

did you fix the problem?? because im havin the same problem

I ended up not fixing it at all. I ordered a new ribbon cable, and started getting the stereo apart, then decided that it was just way more trouble than it was worth, and bought a new stereo. I still have all the parts for it, and if you're still interested in the face plate, contact me at scotth61 at cableone dot net. I'm sure we can work something out for the faceplate or allthe parts ( including the new ribbon and remote)...

    Thanks for your reply!

I seem to have the same problem.

Is there any test that I could do to confirm that the ribbon is bad?

I've had this problem before. The ribbon cable needs to be replaced. They wear out every few years. Take it in for service. Or do you want to sell it? I need the face plate for mine.

Setup a security code

You have to take the unit in to a kenwood service place. They can clear the code for you, but you will have to show them proof of purchase for them to do that. There is no other way. That's the security!

Turner mode

To the right of the number 6 station preset is an auto/name button. In the display it likely shows something like auto 1 or 2. each press will cycle it through Auto 1 > Auto 2 > Manual. You want the manual setting. See if that works for you.

Kenwood KDC-715s problem.

the kenwoods with the motorized face platesdevelop one problem with time. the flexable ribbon cable between the main unit & the face plate. as the face open & closes, over time wares out the cable. problem consists of face plate not opening/closing, display missing & and/or some or all buttons not working. note these can also be intermittent problems. typically the part number is located on the cable itself on the side where it pluggs into the main board. since you have a service manual, you should verify it in the manual. good luck.
