I had same problem on PD42 but code was E112. It normally comes after 3 seconds of switching on and by carrying out following steps it works.
Switch ON and start pressing plus button repeatedly and if battery symbol comes in left corner its working. Actually its 3 seconds when you need to press plus button when it beeps and error message comes on, but its much easier to keep pressing and try your luck. This is not permanent fix but will work every time you want to use it.

I would suggest either going to their site at hilti.com and see if the manual is available or calling them direct at 1-800-879-8000 and asking them to send it to your email.

perhaps they never read the question i also need a new screen did you manage to find one

Hold the POWER button down for a few seconds. Thats how you get into the settings. Cycle through options with the measure button. Use the power button to go to the next option (eg, beep on or off). Press and HOLD the power button to exit this mode.
