Canon PIXMA MP830 Error Message: Scanner is not operating correctly.

My MP830 multi-function unit is like new and was being used solely as a copier now and then to enlarge 4x6 photographic prints. It was not connected to any computer. After some months, ceased to be able to copy and instead started displaying the error message, "Scanner is not operating correctly." Turning the unit off, waiting for while, and turning it back on did nothing to eliminate the problem. Nor did unplugging it for a while. The scanner is not locked, so there is nothing obvious preventing it from functioning properly. Which one of you troubleshooting geniuses can solve this problem?

This problem sucks. It sounds like the scanner has actually gone bad. This can be a couple of things. The actual ccd unit inside the scanner, a position sensor, a motor or a wire harness.

The latter two are fairly unlikely, the first two more likely. Most probable is the CCD unit. I don't think Canon sells it as a separate piece, but it comes inside a replacement scanner assembly. These complete scanner units are expensive. You'll have to check with your local Canon shop to see what they cost.

What are the error codes on my printer,5010 & 6100?

The 5010 error indicates a scanner error. The scanner unit cannot detect the home position, or the scanner unit warming-up is not done properly at power-on. On the LCD, "Scanner is not operating correctly." is displayed.
The 6100 error indicates a logic board error. The check sum value is incorrect in the ROM check at hard-power-on.
Fixing these errors is more expensive than replacing the printer. Sorry.

Cannon printer mp830

HI,

Well I will repeat this answer with a titch more detail.
The 6A00 is a Canon generic code for paper path jam. Some where in the paper path a sensor is activated indicating paper jam so the printer will give off a 6A00 code. As a Canon tech, I usually find the code, almost 90% of the time, is related to the purge unit being jammed with something and not being able to move. Moving the print head assembly will not clear a purge unit if its jammed with paper, paper clips, push pins, screws, cookie crisp, flower bud pods or the like. And yes I have found all those things in a purge unit. The offending item needs to be removed or the purge unit needs replacement. A Pixma MP830 would still be under Canon warranty, get it into a shop and save yourself the hassel.
Incidently, the 6A00 error pertains to all Canon printers made in the last several years, its not just used in one model. And its always a paper path error or purge unit.
I forget myself so here goes, the purge unit, called a spittoon assembly in an HP, lexmark, and other inkjet printers, is where the print head assembly parks when not in use, also its other job is to clean and make sure the print head is clean and open for printing. That is why you'll find the print head assembly parked on top of it. It also has a an electrical pump to milk the print heads and test for ink flow.

Follow Canon's suggestion, take it or send the unit UPS to the Authorized Repair Facility.
You will NOT be able to resolve the problem yourself.

I had the same problem on a brand new MP830. I brought it home, tried to do the easy setup steps, and after I installed the ink cartridges, the print head moved to the right (home) and then I received an error saying that I needed to install the ink tanks (which I just did!). After a restart, I was stuck in the 6A00 wilderness. After reading this thread, I realized that the issue had to be the purge unit. On my MP830, the purge unit is a white plastic assembly (on the right side of the printer where the print head homes) that is spring loaded on rides on a rail. I moved it back and forth (actually forward and back) about 5 times, closed everything up, and after a restart, all is well. Note the the purge unit is NOT the print head!

Goodluck,

Scanner not working

You need to check the operator's manual. For the messages it gives, there is usually a solution for it.

I wanted to download the software for the Pixma MP830 to my new computer I purchased, but I got the error message "the scanner driver supported by this software is not installed. Install it and then...

You have two options:

1) Use the installation disc that came with the printer and install the software onto your new computer using that disc.

2) Go to Canon's website by clicking here and download the correct driver and install it. You will have to know which operating system your new computer has to get the correct driver.

I hope this helps.

Canon mp-830 error code 5010

That code is a scanner error. The scanner unit can not detect the home position or the scanner unit warming up is not done properly at power on. Most of the time the Scanner unit needs to be replaced.
