Jul 14, 2017 - I have the same issue. Almost new machine. Screen says "clear carriage jam", but there's no paper jammed in there. Can't do anything with the printer, since ...
It seems you mistook Carriage Jam as Paper Jam, but they are different issues. Carriage jam means the carriage that carries the cartridges is jammed which needs to be moved or be cleared manually after opening the door.
Please follow the instructions mentioned here (Click Here) [source HP Support].
Carriage most of the time its a Hardware issue and there is no guaranteed resolution.
Wherein we can try to resolve it by performing few reset :
Printer should be directly connected to wall outlet Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer Keep on tapping the power button on the printer for 30 secs Plug in back the power cable and check Check if anything is jamming the carriage then clear it Open the catridge door take out the ctaridges and clean it with a dry cloth Make sure the power is turned on and gently move the carriage(Catridge holder) and check if anything is jamming it to perform reset: Unplug the power cable from the back of the computer (with one hand) press and hold down the (#) and the (6) button at the same time and plug in back the power cable Release the (#) and (6) button (the printer may shut down) on the screen it will display SEMI NVM reset If none of them happens try it once more if still the issue remains Do the same by press (#) and (9) button If still it doesn't work you may change the wall outlet and check if still the issue remains in that case the printer has gone bad and cannot be repaired Can call HP to return the printer and get an upgrade at low price for replacing the damage printer. hp no.: 1-800-474-6836
Carriage jam usually comes from ink on the clear encoder strip that runs across behind the carriage. You need a damp Q-tip to clean from one end to the other, The other thing, on the HP is the cleaning station on the right gets gummed up with old ink and won't go toward the back fully, stopping the carriage.
Step 1: Move the carriage to the center manually if necessary If the carriage is stuck on the right or left side of the product, follow these steps to move the carriage to the center of the product. Step 2: Check for a broken carriage chute The carriage chute is the side wall of the carriage that holds a curved metal piece (the x-bias spring). A broken carriage chute might cause the carriage jam condition. Step 3: Turn the product off and on again Step 4: Clear any paper jam. Step 5: Make sure that the control panel faceplate is correctly installed Step 6: Plug the All-in-One directly into a wall outlet Step 7: Perform a partial reset Step 8: Print a self-test page
Step 9: Service the product. Now this model is outdated as per HP website.
You probably just need a new cartridge, they have an expiration date after which they dont work, and many of the generic refills don't work. HP says to clean the contacts on the cart. with alcohol and also the pins in the carriage where it goes. After that it's just a new cartridge.
Carriage jam means the carriage, where you put the inks, can't move right to left properly. Sometimes ink on the clear strip behind it is the cause. You can carefully clean with damp Q-tip, and check also that the cleaning assembly on the right where the printhead parks, is not stuck.
The Non - Volatile memory of the printer needs to be Erased..
