The computer is starting to make a loud, whirling sound like bearings are going out. I think it is the fan motor because when I turn it upside down, the noise comes from the spinning device next to the vent holes at the left side of the laptop. It doesn't make this sound all the time,, but when it does, I usually can only stop the noise by shutting the computer down with the on/off switch. Sometimes this takes quite a while.
Yes, it sounds like your CPU Fan is about to blow. Once it goes completely out and not turn on, your laptop will run hot and shut down. The fan is replaceable and they don't cost a lot. However your laptop will have to be completely disassembled to get to it and therein lies the cost. They will repair it and ship it back via Fedex or UPS and their price will beat most quotes including the shipping.
SOURCE: shuts down
A Vista Upgrade from XP could cause problems, and even the one you describe, but not an "update" usually. But then again, if when it shuts itself down, if you have to press the power button twice to get it to start back up, I would say that the processor is overheating (in which case the system does this to keep from frying the CPU). If that's the case, a cleaning of the fan and heat sync could fix the problem. You could also run temperature monitoring software (plenty are available for free trials).
As always more detailed information on this issue you are having would help.
Good luck.
SOURCE: Computer shuts down on its own
Usually what gives these types of sighns is that the laptop is overheating.
It hasn't cooled down yet and that's why it will continue to reboot a couple of times it's a safety catch so you don't fry anything within the laptop.
A couple things you can do put it down on a hard surface when in use do not cover the bottom vents that let's the computer breath and cool down.
Also they sell in many stores you will see laptop coolers.
They are flat and light which you put your laptop on there's fans on the bottom that blow up at the bottom of the laptop to keep it cool
I use one it let's the laptops life last longer plus it don't burn the legs or heat up the legs while on the laptop.
Happy Holidays
SOURCE: Loud Fan and Slight Overheating
most likely sounds like your hard drive. Mine did the same thing starting that loud whirring noise and overheating a lot. i took it into geek squad at best buy and it cost 199.99 for the diagnosis of the problem and the repair ( if you want just a diagnosis its 69.99) and then had to buy a hard drive ( i went for the 320 GB for 109.99) and they installed it for free same day in and out. took the whole process about 5 hours on a friday afternoon.
SOURCE: running high temps
Run a vacuum cleaner pipe around the vents, and key board, this should clear dust and fluff. Try and vacuum regularly and if it persists, you could get a cooler pad that it sits on with 2 or 3 fans to cool the base.

I want you to try something and i swear I have fixed laptops under these same symptoms.
I want you to blow out all the ports on your laptop including ram slots and where your hard drive
plugin. Leave all of this out for at least ten minutes as so the
capacitors can discharge the energy that is in them. Sometimes laptops
will incur a power spike and will be unable to release the extra energy
and the system shuts itself down almost like self preservation. There
are no symptoms that lead up to this. Try this and if the above doesn't
work try booting with different RAM and so on once you have exhausted
all possible culprits then you can say that the motherboard is bad. keep me update
You could have sent a short through the motherboard . Let me know if this helps
