If you can see the images on the screen very faintly when you shine a flashlight on the screen, then your problem more than likely is the LCD Inverter. The LCD Inverter costs less than $10, but you will have to disassemble the lcd screen to get to it.

I'm sure you know that you can attach an external monitor to your laptop and hit the FN key and hold it while you hit the correct F1 thru F8 key that will display the image on the external monitor? This could be a solution until you get the inverter fixed.

Now a dishonest repairman will take advantage of you if you take that laptop to them talking about the backlight is going bad. He'll simply bill you $300 and tell you he had to replace the LCD Screen which houses the back light an most times it's easier to replace the screen then fool with the backlight. And in your case all he would do is replace the lcd inverter that sits under the lcd screen and is covered by the strip at the bottom that goes around the lcd screen.

    problem solved, wasnt the inverter or the lcd after all, it seems that the connection between the inverter to the light in the lcd had blown off on the light side, not sure what caused this but a little solder and its as good as new

SOURCE: Acer Travelmate 8100 when pressing fn and f5 nothing happens

I found the problem. The drivers needed for the keyboard are:

Windows\system32\DkbFltr.sys
provided by Dritek System Inc. Version 1.3.00
Windows\system32\8042prt.sys
Windows\system32\kbdclass.sys

I looked at the current drivers for the keyboard. Somehow the keyboard must have been reinstalled or drivers got corrupted. I did a system restore to a time before I installed some new hardware and drivers. Then I looked at the drivers for the keyboard through the control paned =>
keyboard =>
hardware Tab =>
Standard keyboard =>
properties =>
Driver Tab =>
driver details.

And found that the drivers were different except for the last one in the above list

You can update the drivers. Do a search for the first one in the list and the second one in your windows directory(search for hidden files and system files). I found the files in my system32/drivers directory. You may also find it on the disks that came with the Acer.

I have looked on-line for the first one and could not find it. perhaps a better search term swould find it. I also looked on Ace rs site.

Good luck,

SOURCE: fn f5 not working and volume bars not showing when

Acer management software not loaded. Doa system restore to a day before the problem started. If still no good, alt+F10 at boot time to restore it to factory condition. Back up important files first, as this will wipe the c: drive....

let me know if this works or not.

Backlight on keypad not working

Turn on or off the backlight. If your notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, press the F5 key on the keyboard to turn the light on or off. It might be necessary to press the fn (function) key at the same time. If the backlight icon is not on the F5 key, look for the backlit keyboard key on the row of function keys

Im holding the Fn and f5 key to brighten my screen but its not working

The icon colours should match ...usually blue and you have to tap the brightness up button repeatedly as it is incremental.point worth noting.if the power supply is not connected the battery save option can disable the brightness of screen to stretch out the life of battery between charges.

Remove the battery. Keep pressed power button 30 seconds. Reinsert the battery. Try again.
If not let it start like this - black screen. And press ONE TIME FN and F5 until the screen comes back again. OR FN and F9.

Monitor is dark. how to fix?

Walt, hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the Acer, F5, Display Toggle-Over key.

There are at least 3 display options available;

1) Internal display of laptop ONLY

2) Internal display of laptop AND external display

3) External display ONLY.

Were you just using the external display for more 'display real estate room', or was/is there a problem with the internal display of the laptop?

Was no problem? Is now? Even when using the guidance stated above for the Fn and F5 key?

Then if your laptop uses a CCFL for a Backlight, it also uses a screen Inverter. Screen Inverter is bad.

If it doesn't use CCFL/s for a backlight, and uses LED backlighting, replace the LCD screen.
The LED backlighting is incorporated in the LCD screen assembly, and you ain't replacing it.
Replace the entire LCD screen.

Post the laptop manufacturer name, and model number in a Comment. Model number is on Bottom of laptop.

Try to hurry as I'm going to a meeting with the head of General Motors, (Obama), and later with Bill Gates.
