Movie skips and freezes during play

My dvd/vcr combo player freezes often while watching newly rented or purchased dvds. I have several old dvd movies including the Lord of the ring (3-4 hours)that I can play with no problem. but It seems like new dvds are having issues. I have used laser lens cleaners CD and dvd disc cleaners with no luck. thanks

Both my toshiba dvd/vcr combo machines are skipping/freezing, even brand new movies right out of the package. Just started happening more and more the past month. Especially with rented dvd's. But some of brand new kids dvd's they won't work on it either. So I switched players which is the same model and make still same problem. Also plugged in another dvd player, but a message came up as if it was a cd player? wacky. Would it have anything to do with our Wii or digital cable or some kind of problem with our big screen toshiba tv? Its weird because we have had all these things for at least a year and why now?

My SD-V392 combo Video and DVD player pauses during play back continuosly durning some DVD movies. Others play through. Somtimes it can be coaxed back to play by hitting pause or FF and then play. There is no pattern. This unit is not that old. Its is very, very annoying. Toshiba must have a fix for this.

I too have the same problem. It cannot be a cleaning issue (player or disc) or switching DVD's would still show the same problem. I tried the Simpson's movie and had numerous pauses throughout. Suspecting a thermal problem, I pulled out the Simpson's movie, and put in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which played without a single pause.
This must either be a software problem with the player or new DVD's. The pauses seem to be where the player is buffering the video feed (similar to playing a video over the internet with low bandwidth).

Plays fine for an hour then starts to skip forward. Won't track the disc.
Makes no difference in DVD's new, used or burned.

CD and dvd disc cleaners will not solve the problem, a deeper and delicate cleaning procedure by cleaning the lens manually with an cotton swab is needed...
Although the quality of newer discs is to be discussed.

This is a common problem on CD and DVD players.

Altini is correct to a point. You can try taking the top case off, removing the DVD drive and taking the top off of the drive. Then use a q-tip on the laser lense. I use a little squirt of windex on the q-tip. Gently clean the lense even if it doesn't look dirty. Make sure you very gently work the lense up and down through it's travel. This will make sure no dust or dirt is interfering with the lense focusing.
Reassemble and try your movies again. This is a 50 50 proposition. If you still have the same problem, the mechanism has likely gone bad. Time for a new DVD player.

I have a toshiba lap top - the entire mother board was replaced the first year - I have 4 rather useless USB ports and I have had a toshiba DVD player too that didn't last either . I am done with Toshiba. Very poor electronics in my view- not durable period.

Emerson VCR/ DVD Player Model # EWD2203 makes clicking noises when I watch dvds

OK, first go through these steps:
(if they doesn't work, then you have to say good bye to the combo.

1.) check if your DVDs aren't scratched (very common)
2.) check if your DVDs aren't dirty (eg. somebody held it in his hands after he ate a juicy marmelade bread)
3.) Try to clean the head (lens) of your DVD player with a cleaning DVD (at least 5 times).

20 INCH TOSHIBA DVD VCR COMBO, DVD KEEPS READING BUT NEVER DOES

I was having the same issue and I've been to several video stores to rent DVDs and 2 out of 3 rentals have the same affect where it is just 'reading' but even worse, it would play fine and then freeze up during the movie- very frustrating. Now, after 3 years of owning it, it died today. They just don't make them the way they used to :(
