Hi, I have a Hotpoint WD440. For a long time, during a cycle the washing machine has been making grating noises but the washing machine has appeared to work fine and the motor has been operating at the correct speeds. I switched it on last night, i could hear the water feeding in then it started taking in water for 1 second then waiting 5 seconds then taking water in again for 1 second. It does this a few times then emptied the water out the waste and the lights began flashing. Light 4 only (time saver) light flashes and I believe this is fault code F01. I have taken the machine apart today, sprayed contact cleaner on connections and checked the brushes which appear to be fine and about 40-50% worn, but still plenty left on them. They were a tiny bit sooty but the contacts were clean. I also checked the motor and this is moving freely and the drum also appears to be fine. There are also no burned out wires or loose cables. From what I can see, the pcb does not smell and there are no obvious signs of any burning. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? The washing machine will happily start a program but the drum will not spin. Thanks.

i am a retired engineer of 20 years, and its about a year since i worked on combination washer/dryers but if the heater elements fine and power comes from timer there must be cut out somewhere around where it should warm up, look all round the machine one may be hidden or hard to spot there maybe about 3 one of them one of them could be a trigger device (you can press a button to reset it) that style is a very small cube about the size of a sugar lump with2 spades on it, others look like a small flat oval or round shape the size of a five pence piece with 2 spade wires on them, remove the plug from wall and remove these spades and check the contacts for continuity, you need not remove from machine to do so, no circuit + no heat, replacement item not expensive, thats where to start based on the information given, check the sensors you mention again, it sounds like your so close, good luck and work safe

Just had the exact same problem and think I may have solved it. even turning power off didn't solve it. I think what happened was that the programme had been interupted while drying. I tried everything to get machine to work afterwards but only the following worked - while lights are flashing put back to the same time I had set to dry (60) in my case and turned the dial to M for dry high heat light goes off after a short while - leave for 5 mins then press off. machine will make a noise for a short while then stop.
If this happens then machine should be back to normal.
this is same for both posts I guess.

This is typical of a control board problem.
About 60% of the time they can be repaired, but it's easier to replace it than keep testing.
If you are competent at electrical repairs, then read -on, otherwise order a replacement, and have it fitted.
Isolate supply.
Remove top cover by removing screws at top rear, slide cover rearwards.
Control board is on right at the front.
Test connections - remove and replace all connections, checking for signs of arcing.
Check main wiring loom to motor for integrity and damage.
If no signs of damage, remove control unit board, and examine for arcing or poor contacts, overheated components or damage.
If everything still looks ok, a replacement control board should be fitted and the machine tested.
Hope this helps.

sound like the contact points on the timer are probebly dirty or arched to where they are not making good contact. you can take and clean them with a piece of emery cloth if you are mechanically inclined and can take the timer apart. Also there's a set of contacts down by the motor ti check too.
Good Luck,

Check first the thermal fuse.
Test heating element to ensure is not grounded, and staying always on. Test the fan and ventilation system.
If you find no fault in there , then test the timer control board.
